I took Japanese beginners in high school for 2 years from 2013-14. There were 7 people in the class but everybody except me and this repressed trans male dropped it. However, since my trans classmate had another class on the same timetable so he would only show up once a week. I initially took it out of interest for anime/game and other weeb stuff.
After the first class, I was gonna drop it but I realized it was an easy class for a bilingual speaker so I stayed. The Japanese teacher was this pudgy white lady in her 20s who wasn't actually qualified but she knew a fair bit of Japanese, however I had to correct her japanese a couple times. Since she wasn't a "professional" Japanese teacher she would just give me worksheets and read from the textbook.
She would let me watch videos and listen to music on my headphones since I was the only person in the class with her the majority of the time. I took advantage of this by finishing whole seasons of GoT and Breaking Bad while also catching up on Street Fighter IV EVO 2014. In fact, instead of studying Japanese I kinda just watched Anime, YouTube videos and listened to the DeathNote and Kill la Kill OST while pretending to do my work.
Class was twice a week, 1 hr on Monday and 2.5 hours on Thursday. Thursday was sports day so I'd actually had to stay back instead of going home early/doing exercise. Technically, Thursday class was 3 hrs long and started when the lunch bell rang but I always went to lunch instead. I didn't know until like 4 weeks in but the teacher never said anything about it so I just kept going to lunch. I don't think she cared coz I would eat lunch in front of her classroom with my friends.
I did actually complete the majority of my work only because I happened to be a fast learner in Japanese so I would just mess around on my laptop for 75% of the class. It didn't help that the teacher got pregnant and barely showed up to class, even before pregnancy she didn't really interact with me much besides saying hello and giving me worksheets where I would then put on my headphones and zone out by watching shitty anime like Pokemon or play Ace Attorney.
I then graduated with an award 1st in Japanese but as there was only one other person in the class who wasn't present most of the time, it didn't feel much of an achievement. A year after graduation, I was accused by my Japanese teacher of stealing her textbook and she would continue to slander me and often question my younger siblings when I would return her textbook. If you read through this, you might've remembered me mentioning how she never showed up to school after getting pregnant, so when I returned the textbook I had to give it to a substitute teacher and sign my debt note.

Since then I been studying Japanese occasionally.
