Opening a channel to the lightning network is the same as making a Bitcoin transaction, so it would incur a fee and have a transacation time. Once your money is in the LN channel it is basically free and instant transactions across the LN hubs.

So ideally the great majority of payments would happen on LN and greatly reduce the total amount of transactions, opening up a channel on LN would have a much lower fee and happen much faster, the mempool wouldn't be as clogged up with small transactions.

Also your concern about not being connected to the same node, the LN is meant to be developed enough where all transactions are possible because there will be a myriad of nodes to connect all users, it's like a game of six degrees of separation but with payment channels. Widespread adoption is key.

And fun fact: BTC can always increase the block size if it will help with opening up LN channels. SW2X was opposed because it was proposed by the participants of the NYA and did not reach concensus from the nodes, BTC isn't necessarily opposed to future blocksize increases though.
