Does anyone understand the new tax laws on trading crypto? Im just going to assume Im only going to be taxed on gains? Like, for example, I buy $1,000 of Ethereum, send it to Binance, trade that $1,000 for NEO, Im not going to have to pay any taxes yet? If I make a gain of $500 on the NEO, trade it back into Ether for $1,500, send it to (lets say) Coinbase, trade it for USD (not sure if I have to do that, since I havent taken any profits out) and withdrawal it all into my bank, am I getting taxed on the $500 gain when I trade the NEO for Ether, and when I trade that for USD, and again when I withdrawal it?

Its confusing to me.

Have you guys recently started getting a shift of mindset as far as finances go?

I noticed that im more willing to spend a little extra on better food (not ramen noodles every night) and I give out a little more of my own money to someone more in need than me. I was like that before, but now I noticed its more amplified.

I guess I feel a whole lot more secure and less stress than I did when I only had a few BTC. I think the ALQO mn did it tbh.

Sad I didn't buy anything during the dip.

I know I play it safe (market went bananas for a bit there), and that's certainly safer in the long run but so many missed gains.

On the bright 3/4 of my main holds have come back a bit (ETH/SIA/BAT), so I can't do too much complaining. Fuck LTC though lol

I guess nobody dares to guess. I just hope it won't take all year.

I have been pondering on another question that was asked a while ago: how much money will you need to have earned before you quit my day job?

I don't think I'll ever quit 100%, because I enjoy the social contacts through my job and I still get to check the market in between moments at work.
I will cut down to 1 or 2 days if I reach 100k

It's hard to say.

Atomic Swaps are coming to Bitcoin and Litecoin in the next couple of months, which is a way to exchange between the two instantly without going through an exchange. So if Lightning Network didn't exist atomic swaps would offer a way to smoothly exchange Bitcoin into Litecoin for faster and cheaper transactions, so people could avoid fees and slow payments that way.

In its current model paying with Bitcoin over the Lightning Network requires opening up a Lightning Network account, sort of like a preloaded gift card for low fee fast transactions, and payments are made across hubs in that channel. It's like a warp pipe in Mario almost. Ideally Lightning Network devs would created an interface to keep most of this shit under the hood so the layman could use it.

So atomic swaps and the Lightning Network are both two ways of tackling scalability. Litecoin could be rendered obsolete if the Lightning Network is both successful and has a user friendly interface. That being said Litecoin can still be utilized for its original purpose: as a test playground for new Bitcoin technologies.

tl;dr Bitcoin and Litecoin can see gains across different timescales and their technologies improve, and it's hard to say what the ideal ratio for holding them is. I'd say Bitcoin is the safer bet for long term gains, the LTC/BTC could absolutely improve and see stellar gains in the short/mid term, but it's longterm success will always be dependent on Bitcoin.

FWIW I'm 40% ETH, 25% BTC, 20% LTC, and 10% alts (NEO, XMR, XRB mostly). All my new money is invested into ETH and alts.

It's hilarious watching clear talk about "lightning network" and "atomic swaps" and other buzzwords he picked up from his ponzi scheme classes. In reality none of those things matter. It is too late for BTC. The electricity required by the network and the increasingly slow transaction times won't be meaningfully impacted by any of those buzzwords.

Once China completes its crack down on BTC mining and selling, it's game over.

From my own research, Clears posts seem to be spot on. The integration of lightning and Segwit will not only reduce transaction time but it will also reduce fees, developers have already been testing out lightning and widespread adoption seem likely by the end of this year. Secondly, miners have already started hauling equipment to other countries where its profitable to mine, and theres plenty of places in the world still left to do that. Canada in particular is a growing region for mining because its a cold region with cheap electricity. But thats what my research tells me, maybe the information you have is more updated

People have been saying bullshit buzzwords about reducing BTC fees and transaction times for damn near a year. It's all just getting worse, even with segwit. The people who are most religious when it comes to promoting this bullshit don't even understand what the technology is or how it works. They just heard it from their favorite cryptobro on twitter and are running with it as if it is gospel.

Most mining will cease once China crushes it. Some people will move their gear, but most won't be able to because of the costs and the logistics of having to pick up and move a huge mining operation.

Mining is not sustainable in electricity either. It's going to crash. The numbers do not lie.

Doesnt lightning network require users to pay fees to open and close a channel whenever they want to make a payment

It seems useful for recurring payments but not useful at all for someone making a one off payment to a recipient not connected to the same node

Also I read that they seem to get a lot of failed transactions during tests
