I have lived here over 10 years, and never once seen this. Give up a seat on the train for an elderly person? Sure, all the time. But a place in line? Try not to be loud, overly boisterous, or rude. Some things you may do may come across as indecent, such calling people by their first name when you should be calling them by their last. The Japanese are very big on respect, so keep that in mind.
