The implication is that he was sent to jail and convicted of murdering a suspect in custody...however, I never thought that.

I think he was arrested, but not convicted. Considering the extreme circumstances, I think he falls under the "crime of passion" context.

Not convicted of murder, but probably a reduced manslaughter charge, plead out, and got probation. Definitely not a badge anymore.

Yeah, I know that the point was that he gave into rage and became a killer himself, but I'm fairly certain no judge in the country would even entertain the possibility of him serving a jail term for murdering a serial killer after the the killer revealed that he had murdered his pregnant wife for no reason through the presentation of her head.

I mean, yeah, it's a noir ending, but realistically, he was pretty fucking justified.

A police officer murdered a serial killer that had just killed that police officer's wife.

The D.A. probably wouldn't even file charges.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

Most likely. I'd like to think Somerset would a calming influence, but there's no way he could go back to their apartment and not have what happened run through his head.

And even if he did live, it would be pills and booze for the majority of it.

Yes, which is arguably an even more fitting ending for a modern noir story.

Pretty much Max Payne except instead of substance abuse interspersed with action scenes it's just more substance abuse.
