My preference in order (of the ones I've played at least one installment):

1.) Tales
2.) Xenoblade
3.) Kingdom Hearts
4.) FFVII
T-5.) Pokemon / Paper Mario 1/2 (everything after TTYD is shit)

SMT for its use of elements and weaknesses, use of HP for specials, necessity of buffs, and general viability of status ailments.

Paper Mario comes in 2nd for its timed/active gameplay to enhance attacks and defense.

Tales is okay, but the guest AI is hit or miss for the series as a whole.

But really it's Baldur's Gate II.

Tales. Even though in every single game in that poll you can spam an attack and beat the game, in Tales you at least have different options.

Abyss was the best at subverting this, in my opinion, due to FoF changes.

I came here to name drop Grandia and then Star Ocean, which is a lot like Tales.

The combat in the Mario and Luigi RPGs should be used in other RPGs.

For those whom don't know, it's a very interactive style of combat where pressing a button at the correct time while performing an attack will make that attack stronger. Special Attacks require multiple successful button inputs to achieve maximum strength. You can also dodge and counter enemy attacks by pressing a button with good timing.

Timed attacks and dodging are almost mandatory in combat. The enemies and bosses are loaded with HP, and the Mario bros can only take 2-3 hits before dying in the later parts of the games.

The two are nothing alike. Mario & Luigi can be won through spamming whatever special attack you're best at, whereas Paper Mario is much more strategy-based.

Tales series for all RPG's, Hyperdimension Neptunia for turn-based RPG's. Honorable mention to Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE for having one of the most creative battle systems I've seen in an RPG, but I wouldn't say it was the best overall.

You can't really bunch FF into one group. The series has a variety of wildly different combat styles.

I'll say the Bravely Default games though. Screw your options.

I mean yeah

The point of "on steriods" is it's more than just pressing "A" at a given time, or pressing the control stick left to charge the hammer. M&L specials have like 3-4+ button sequences to nail the special correctly.

Haven't played Stick of Truth in a while but IIRC it's pretty similar; turn-based with some slightly more "complex" action commands (in relation to Paper Mario)

That completely disregards the nature of the battle system. Mario & Luigi is much more of a traditional RPG in that progression is based heavily on stats and getting level-ups. Paper Mario's badge system is extremely complex; no one strategy is dominant and there are hundreds of different ones. Mario & Luigi's dominant strategy is spamming the shit out of the move that does the most damage.

This would be great if the games weren't comically easy outside of the single bonus dungeon/area.

It's okay I'm just not a fan of how not getting the first strike dramatically increases the difficulty of the encounter.

I think the game could have benefitted greatly by not giving you such a huge advantage on first strike it really trivialized most random encounters.
