Apparently the Windows patch for Meltdown and Spectre had a tendency to brick computers that were running certain types of antivirus. So now in order for someone to receive this and future updates, their antivirus needs to set a registry key to confirm that it will work with the updates. People who don't use any antivirus need to set the key manually.

Linux distros don't do that.

Nor do they need antivirus most of the time.

they do not, however, many people will dual boot linux with windows and it's beneficial to have a linux antivirus then, as you can use your linux partition to scan for win32 viruses. If you're trying to clean your computer from viruses it's generally in your favor to try and make the fight as unfair as possible for the virus.

I suppose that'd work.
I myself dual-boot (I'd be running Windows in a VM for games if this POS laptop could do it properly) and my method for avoiding infections on Windows is a lot simpler - only use it for playing games and going to sites which don't carry sensitive information - so, logging into gameFAQS would be fine, but my email account isn't.
