It really is since "a ton" is not a measurement. Sure, people fell for it, but "a ton" is a gross exaggeration.

It's far more accurate than "No one thought it was real." or "only a very few, very stupid people thought it was real." but fine, I'll rephrase and say "More than a few people fell for it". There, now we can all be happy.

That's your opinion.

Outside of the stupidity line, it's not an "opinion" that a ton of people fell for it. It's not an "opinion" on what they did to advertise it. So...

It really is since "a ton" is not a measurement. Sure, people fell for it, but "a ton" is a gross exaggeration.

You couldn't be more wrong if you tried. I know you want to be the "so above these idiots" guy but in your desperation to do that, you've ignored reality.

The Sci-Fi channel was literally sued over running auxiliary bullshit related to this project claiming it was true.

I don't think it went anywhere, but the idea that only a small amount of people fell for the trick does not line up with history.

They did an incredible job with how they advertised and the gullible people fell for it. Fake websites back when the internet was still fairly new to the masses, the actors hid from public sight, one of the earliest instances of "based on a true story" mockumentary film types. Etc.

This. I remember going to see it when I was 10 and I was fascinated by it. The website felt so real. Police evidence style photos of their abandoned car and everything.

I remember when Paranormal Activity came out while I was in HS, a lot of my peers thought it was real.

Though I knew it was fake, I definitely played into everyones' misconception about the film.

"Wow that's crazy I can't believe that shit really happened!"

It's kind of like riding a rollercoaster. It's way more fun when you get into the thrill and excitement with everyone else even if you aren't scared.

I was 13 and saw it in theaters. No one around me in school or anywhere else thought it was real. Neither did the media even play that up. The big thing was that it scared the shit out of people with the style. This was in NYC, so maybe in other parts of the country, people were easily duped.

However, a year before, after watching "Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County", everyone was like "yo, was that shit real last night?" Because it was straight up a documentary moreso than found footage.

I think people forget how different society was about this stuff back then.

Found footage movies were not popular. Nowhere near as many people used the internet and if they did they would find a viral marketing site. The internet was rife with urban legends back then.

Also don't forget the people who simply didn't really give it that much thought. The marketing tells them that it's true and that's that. Most people don't overly think about movies and take things at face value and move on.

The actors have said that people have told them they thought they were dead. Their parents received sympathy cards. So there was a large chunk of people who believed in it.

Also don't forget that a lot of us were in school when this movie came out. Even today there are kids who believe in shit like Slenderman.

I'm not sure what's so hard to believe that people fell for it. People still fall for clickbait crap.

I remember this dumbass that lived on my street kept insisting that it was real and that the found footage you see at the beginning and end of the movie, along with Leatherface, was all real because it was found footage and marketed as a true story. He ended up calling me an idiot over it. Oh, the irony.

It really did. It was basically three "film students" -- none of whom could hold a camera straight -- wandering the woods and cussing for an hour. Nice buildup before that, though.

s0nicfan posted...
Did the "found footage genre" even exist prior to that movie? At least, exist in terms of mainstream awareness since I'm sure some indie director had used the trick before for some movie that never went anywhere.

...ffs, Cannibal Holocaust. People got arrested for that. And before you say, "well, it wasn't big...", I should point out that it made $200million.... in 1980. Meanwhile Blair Witch only made $250m roughly 20 years later. So which do you think was more mainstream?
