Honestly we could been posthumously keep giving Akira Kurosawa awards and it wouldn't be too much.

Ang Lee didn't do anything in 2017.
Alec Su did a stellar job on The Devotion of Suspect X. That actually deserves accolades.

There are a ton of categories that just had white people in it. Funny she didn't talk about that while she was complaining. It is like she was trying to take Oprah's pop, and that is the only thing she could think to do. Note this is not an endorsement of the Oprah.

There is a problem where women aren't given the same directorial opportunities as men do to a combination of lack of connections, studio biases, and Hollywood's generally risk-adverse stance (and Hollywood considers just about anything that isn't status quo a risk). These problems do need to be addressed.

That said, nominating women directors just to make sure women directors are nominated isn't a fix to that problem. It's more of a feel-good symptom fix that leaves the original problem untreated.

Not sure why people are trying to act like it was only supposed to be a dig at Golden Globe nominations. It could easily be seen as a criticism for the movie industry as a whole. Did she say something else?

I was shocked that Greta Gerwig didn't get nominated for Lady Bird or Dee Rees for Mudbound.

So if you're a director looking for work, do people just call you up and ask if you want a job? Does someone say you are working on this project now? Do you have to attend an interview and submit a resume?

I'm just wondering what the hiring process is, maybe women directors have been turning down a lot of roles because they had creative differences. Maybe they made a crappy movie, just look at Michael Bay, it happens.

As far as I know they're chosen by producers. It's an industry where you generally need to rely on personal connections and gradually build them up. I don't think it's a matter of female directors turning roles down. Pretty much every single female director out there talks about how hard it is for them.
