Laugh tracks were prevalent for most of TV history until the mid 2000s, but how did the industry largely move away from them by that point?

The laughtracks became too advanced...almost sentient. They wouldn't laugh at the garbage on network tv so they thought it was best to remove them altogether.

I'm gonna say Fox was a big part of this. The Simpsons doesn't have a laugh track, then Malcolm in the Middle...
