Barney is a sociopath who has escaped police custody forever and seems to never even be charged so let's put him aside.

Everyone seems to hate Ted for various reasons.

Everyone seems to hate Lily as well for what she does to Marshall.

Robin doesn't receive as much hate but some dislike certain aspects of her character

But no one has anything bad to say about Marshall, at least when the show is brought up.

I've never seen the show but I have seen Breaking Bad and the lengths people go to pretend Skyler is a horrible person and Walt is a hero has lead me to the conclusion that the fanbases' opinions on what characters are "awful" is largely determined by how much camera time they have as opposed to anything they do.

So I'd assume whoever gets the most camera time (other than an outright villain) is the least awful character on HIMYM. At least according to the fanbase.

It's more about progression.

Walt is the guy you're following. He's pushing the story forward and doing cool and interesting things.

Skyler is just an annoyance along the way, constantly weighing him down.

True, that's also another way to look at it. It's difficult to see it from their point of view because like with Dexter, I wanted him to be caught from the very first episode; I never really rooted for him the way others did.

Yeah it's so evil the way her caring about their disabled son and upcoming baby weighs down Walts repeated crimes including murder, theft and GTA to fuel a Meth empire.

I guess I would say Marshall is the least bad.

Robin isn't terrible. I dock a lot of points for her ending up with Ted rather than Barney, but the writers apparently were never going to adapt to the series as it went, and just wanted to stick with their precious awful ending. Aside from that, she's alright.

What's wrong with Lily and what did she do to Marshall? Like as far as I remember she can be a little neurotic and self-centered but she always comes good in the end. It's cute how much she loves marshall.

I guess Lily is just kind of a special brand of crazy that seems to work in their relationship, most of the time.

But without a doubt Marshall is the most solid dude who's worst traits seem to be things like being too competitive or not cleaning the kitchen.
