Software Dev

I'd give it like a solid 7.5/10. It's pretty simple and pay is just perfect. Rarely have to do anything outside work hours that relates to work- can be a bit unfulfilling and unenergizing at points but overall is a decent intellectual challegne that very efficiently pays the bills and gives me good skills.

I haven't seen a female in decades as a result.

SAN/NAS Storage Engineer. Mainly NAS, but I can do SAN stuff if needed.

I'd give it a B. Get to travel a bit and work from home mostly. Wish I got paid a little more, but who doesn't. Just would like to be closer to the national average since I'm pretty good at it and feel like i should be at the upper end. I work for a larger company with large projects so I'm getting valuable experience, but don't earn as much as I could elsewhere, bit of a trade off.

I do mine for a commercial flooring company.

Project Estimator:

Take blueprints from a job and read them. Figure out what floor coverings they want on the job and figure out how much they need and what it costs to do it. My number is turned into a company who is running the job (General Contractor) and hopefully we get the job through them based on my numbers.

It's 90 percent done on a computer.

The other 10 percent of my job is doing changes that the architect wants, or telling our installers how the 150 foot roll of carpet should be cut and installed... stuff like that.

I do ceramic wall and floor tile, carpet (roll and tile), LVT, VCT, sheet vinyl, etc.

It's a lot of math, but the computer does a lot of the harder stuff for me.

health care policy analyst for a nonprofit

I track state and federal legislation that could have an impact on health care in my state. I am responsible for researching the likely impacts and crafting our messaging to either support or oppose or ignore legislation, depending on the impact and who else may be interested enough in the policy to expend resources to support/oppose it themselves. I produce written, audio, and visual content to this end.

As new policies become implemented, I do various kinds of outreach to give the public information and resources about how to respond to them. Sometimes it is the general public (I had a media interview and was quoted in the paper just this week, for instance), sometimes it is presentations to professional associations, sometimes it is in legislative committees.

I would give it pretty high marks, I really like my job.

I enjoy it. Some days are slow like today, other days are swamped. Pays well, great benefits, free daycare (huge with four young kids), and it brings a good deal of satisfaction and a decent amount of prestige.

I knew someone that worked here. That part didn't get me the job though, just an interview. The main requirement that they were looking for is the ability to pick up and learn the estimating software.

The program looks like this:

O8c6f1R

I take the blueprint PDF's and put them in the program. So instead of the designs seen in the picture above it would look like actual blueprints.

pw1Y1IE

It's a little more complicated than my explanation but it's the basics.

Not really designed with that in mind. Most places don't deal with 150 page thick, 42 inch long paper, blueprints anymore. Most of it is sent in PDF copies. I have hundreds of gigs on my PC of just blueprints of jobs I did work on. There's boring jobs (hotels) and there's fun ones to mess on (literally had to sign an NDA with the federal government)

The programs aren't advanced enough to go to a print and say okay this room is 15x12 or whatever. I have to click the outline of the room with the blueprints as a background. It's kind of like a paint by number.

i started at the dishpit on the brewpub side of the company with no prior brewing experience at all, moved up to being a sous chef, went from kitchen to bartending, and then eventually got pulled from the front of house to the brewery

i talked with the owner of the brewery at length about my passion for beer and how i wanted to get involved with the brewing process when i first started, got my cicerone certification (which isnt much) and been trying to get into the BJCP

all the times i talked with the bossman himself he always told me that it was nice to have someone who was working at the brewery/brewpub who actually had a passion for beer and not seeing it as just a job which he really appreciated

over time he slowly had the brewers bring me in on days i was off on to learn all the different equipment in the brewery, how to clean brite tanks, moving wort into fermenters, how to work a carbstone to accelerate carbonation in beer, how to run the bottling machine, etc etc

bossman eventually sat me down one day and told me my services were no longer needed in the taproom and asked me i wanted to move into the brewery fulltime

the hours CAN get shitty sometimes (7am-7pm if we're behind or have a big order request) but most days i usually work 7am3/4pm and it really isnt that stressful

some days all we do is bottling, some days i literally do nothing but stand in one place and control the flow and pressure of the water into tanks, clean and fill kegs, clean the fermenters/brite tanks, sit in the lab and do QA (which is basically taste testing), check on the carbonation and againg of our limited bourbon barrel releases, etc etc

My "job" right now is 1 month rotations working in different specialties. So basically it's like starting a new job every month and right when I've gotten the swing for things, I'm uprooted into a new environment with new people, new patient population, etc. Some months I get a fair bit of autonomy and act as a sort of sub-intern. Others are basically glorified shadowing.
