John Brown is a hero outside of USA

Where did this question come from? I was singing and I sang the first verse. (JB body lies a mouldering in the grave)

The guy bought land and gave it to freed men. He was not some terrorist.

I would be very surprised if many people outside the U.S. even know who he was.

Most cities have a street named after Martin Luther King. Not only did we have slavery. Many immlgrants were indentured.

Makes the other country look good to say "we outlawed slavery and sent money to underground railway" but look at the big bad who did not.

John Brown is one of America's greatest heroes.

John Brown's cause was obviously righteous, but he was a terrorist by basically any definition of the word. He literally dragged pro-slavery people out of their homes and had them hacked to death by broadswords. It wasn't killing people in battle. He wasn't fighting in self-defense. He was actively abducting and violently murdering people for a political cause. That's terrorism even if the cause is noble.

There was a massacre. If Brown led it, I would be more appalled by the poor strategy than the random violence. Brown did not take credit for it. What was the scholarship of the congressional committee that says Brown led the massacre? Keep in mind that a Representative went into the senate and beat a Senator with a walking stick during this period.

What I mean by poor strategy is that Brown wanted abolitionists to stop slavery. Brown would have lost his cred if they thought he did that.

I downloaded a file which is supposed to be WEB DuBois' biography of Brown but my phone's pdf readers cannot open it. Otherwise I would look to see what DuBois' says.

Back then before TV recognizing someone you never met is crazy.

I sincerely wish I had the chops to get to the bottom of the massacre accusation. I have thought of a good question for anyone who does historical research! Did the congressional hearing convene after John Browns arrest at Harpers Ferry?

(I ask because it is the sort of thing large organizations like governments do to justify an action and because if it convened earlier there would have been charges).
