I understand the concept that they're a currency to circumvent banks and the government, but that's not how they're really being utilized. Everyone is just buying and holding them like an asset, and a vast majority of the interest in them was generated from bitcoin's insane run this year and wanting to get in on easy money, which doesn't really make it a currency anymore.....

But if it's not a currency then what value does it really have past speculation and demand? It just seems inevitable that all of this is going to collapse upon itself with these kind of trends.

I dunno, am I missing something here?

Not really, more comparable to investing in gold. Owning stock of a company means you own a piece of that company. That has an intrinsic value, you own a piece of a company that(ideally) is making money, and in turn will reward you for your investment

But even when you compare it to gold it's not really the same. Gold is a physical asset, sure that asset can lose of gain value, but you own that asset. Bitcoin is just data, what really drives it's value?

Not all cryptocurrency is trying to replace fiat money and banks. A lot of coins are actually tokens that are used in blockchain tech. Different coins/tokens are tryinf to do different things.

You should head over to the crypto general topic. You'll find many people that can give you use case examples for different coins

you really suck at investing if you're not turning at least a 10% gain in the market. And I'm setting a very low bar here
