It started out as economic protests and has now evolved into a nation wide call for revolution. How is nobody talking about this? This is fucking huge

Didn't their army just claim today that they "defeated" the "dissidents" and then the country followed up with a significantly larger counter-protest with a huge number of supporters? I got the impression from BBC reporting that the country has it mostly under control.

This. Turning the entire region into a massive sunni/shia war sounds like a recipe for a new world war.

Last I heard, the government shut down their internet, so information might be slow getting out of there.

Yes, but the issue is it'll likely force the current government to go more hardline in maintaining power, which can have follow-on consequences to their relationship with Saudi Arabia and Israel.

Ehhh... since the Iranian government has said some pretty strong things against the protesters (who are mostly young and unemployed) and since the counter-protest by government supporters was enormous... I don't think a revolution is likely. The dissidents could be jailed or simply killed, and I don't think Iran would face much rebuke from its citizens (though it would certainly face international sanctions)

The Iranian guy on the radio said those people counter protesters were paid and like half of them are being brought in from other countries

Interesting. What's even more interesting is that the current government was caused by the revolution in Iran in 1979.

It's kind of fascinating how many middle eastern governments are basically perpetually on the verge of the military just "resetting" the government. Iran, Turkey, Egypt, etc.

Sunnis don't have enough influence for that to be the crux of the conflict. In Iran it's young secularists vs religious hardliners, where there is a very good side to root for unlike Sunni vs Shia sectarianism. I would say second to that would be Kurds wanting independence.

Well that's not surprising. I'm more surprised it's not all instead of just some

Didn't we have something like this not too long ago over there? It fizzled out (or was stamped out) and nothing really came of it if I recall.

I think the guy mentioned something happened in 2009 but blamed it on Obama cause he didn't support it or something

People are chanting "down with the dictator" in reference to the ayatollah, marching down the streets.

They're trying to storm bases to get weapons.

They're hungry due to food shortages.

Literally powder keg.

I don't think peoole realize how western most Iranians under 40 really are. The younger they are, the more moderate they are.

This is the last thing the current US would want.
This would put into dismays years of US partnership with Suadi Arabia.

This might not get much further, but if it does it could become interesting.
