Also, I'd like to know what kind of specialized training gas pumpers receive that makes them so much safer at pumping gas. Is there a class? Is there an OSHA certification?

Don't smoke while pumping gas, don't start a bonfire in between the pumps, then attempt to douse it with gasoline, stuff like that, I'd imagine.

Because the Insurance the store owner has to pay is a LOT more when people are out there doing it themselves and not having hired people doing it.

Not trying to start an argument, but is this really a thing, or something you are pulling out of your'e ass to have an argument for no self fill laws? I only ask because I can't imagine there are many costly/deadly gas station accidents caused by motorists filling up their own tanks, given modern gas pumps and all.

Also the gas station would be liable if the attendant puts thr wrong type of fuel in someones car

This. No gas station owner wants to have to buy a customer a brand-new $70,000 truck because his moron employee put in gas instead of diesel.

That insurance argument sounds like bullshit TBH. There's no fucking way a gas station is saving more than a worker's yearly pay in insurance costs simply by being full service. These places typically aren't gonna be paying much more than maybe $1,500 for a general liability policy, and that's a high end estimate. Looks like the carriers I work with in my job (insurance underwriting) have no rate differences between self and full service.

I don't understand how pumping gas should be considered a career. Liberals are all about " higher education", but can't admit the job of pumping gas is completely not needed in 2018?

I guess...maybe kids off in the summer could pump gas...but do you really want some kid pumping your gas that doesn't know anything about gas, cars, or ANYTHING?

It's a job that doesn't need to exist. These people need to get other jobs.

Funny thing too, I remember liberals saying that we can't prop up the coal industry just for the sake of coal workers keeping their jobs. Those people need to get with the times and stop impeding progress.

But I guess they'll fight to stop people from pumping their own gas. Lmao.

My thoughts exactly.

Because coal is damaging to the environment! Having people pump your gas will give you CHEAPER gas and MORE JOBS. My god, I honestly can't even be in this topic anymore. I will get a Warning.

If it made things cheaper, gas stations in other states would voluntarily hire attendants.

Not really. The savings won't be immediate, so many stores will hesitate to take on an initial increase in operating costs.

Insurance providers in other states may not even make a provision for attendants pumping instead of customers (because it hasn't been a common position for several decades).

There's also the culture to factor in. Look at how some people absolutely flip out when they travel to one of these attendant-states and are told they can't pump their own gas. Imagine the outrage if that person rolled up to their usual station one day and were told they couldn't pump their own gas.

Gas stations in Oregon are own by companies that own gas stations in every other state in the country. Do you think that these corporations don't monitor the profits of each store and that if attendants made their stores more profitable that it would somehow escape their attention?

Of course you don't think that because it's obvious that you're trolling.

You guys literally just legalized gay marriage a couple weeks ago. Way to be behind even a super religious country on that front. But yeah, 2 states had this dumb law. America's so backwards for that. We're backwards for other reasons.

And most states have been self-services for probably over a half century.

So you make it illegal to raise the cost of gas for this, so the station has to eat the cost

As compared to fighting for a "job of the future" that (dangerous substance aside) involves technical skills of a trained chimp and only seems to exist due to legal protections that revolve around fear of accidents that might happen if normal people try the task themselves that doesn't seem to exist in a lot of the world.

At least that coal job sounds like it takes effort.

No it's not. If there's multiple cars at a station and you happen to be the last one then you have to wait till they're done with everyone before they get to you. In that time I can have my gas already pumping and probably be half done by the time they get to me but at a station with attendants you can't and have to wait. I'm sorry that you can't be arsed to get out of your car for like 3 minutes to pump your own gas because it's too cold, or it's raining when there's a top over the entire station.
