I moderate a subreddit of 1,500 subscribers (1,000 unique visits a day) some of the flags are hilarious as fuck and it's nice to ban people from time to time too.

I actually don't like banning but I will if I have too.

I usually give three warnings

1st ban 1 day
2nd ban 1 week
3rd ban 1 year

If it's a 1 karma spammer it's just a permanent ban (they always make new accounts anyways)

Wow dude you're in all of the big subreddits and GameFAQs too. That's actually quite impressive if you ask me.

But serious how did tizorres get to be the mod of so many defaults as a poster with so little karma?

I don't know if he was a GameFAQs mod first but I think if you apply for mod and you tell them you're a moderator somewhere else with some experience they will give you a lot of consideration.

The subreddit I moderate now I took over because the old moderators forsaken it and people complained to the administrators. If you apply for the subreddit to re-open you are also applying to moderate the subreddit so that's how I became a mod.

eh thanks, lol.

I actually modded a few more but today I left a few subs because I thought i modded to many. I left tifu, idubbbztv and nomanskythegame along with a few smaller subs.

it's pretty easy actually. Once you get on one sub you can use that as a way into others and then it just snowballs.

This is why i've never been a mod of anything.

I think a lot of it is filling out applications when a sub puts them out. Asking to mod directly usually never works but doing so when the time is right does. If you put thought into an app when a sub opens them up, they will look into them more. In my experience, mods tend to try to hire mods with no experience more so than with some, since they haven't picked up any bad habits. Sometimes it's also that you are actually part of the sub, even by just lurking. Knowing the flow of the sub, the content and the rules can go a long way. And that shows when you right that in an app.

Take r/tifu for instance (however I just left the mod team today but I use to be head honcho there, the guy in charge, and lead the new mod process), we brought in at least 60 new mods last year with 10 of them being established mods (mods of defaults/large), 30 being somewhat experienced (mods of subs from 30-500k users) and 20 new mods with no experience whatsoever.

oh and @pick4six there is a discord server for mods of subreddit that you can join, has over 500 members. It's a great way to get into the metashphere, get help or feedback on mod related things. I can send you an invite if you like.

I still think being a mod gives you a leg up. And you basically kinda gave numbers to prove it. 40 out of those 60 new mod hires were previous mods. Those other 20 got lucky.

That's true, unfortunately. I got kinda lucky by making a subreddit that ended up getting popular, r/CasualConversation.

OutOfTheLoop is looking for new mods now, wouldn't hurt to apply. https://redd.it/7mpr9s

I made a comment saying a sub should be made for a certain concept in a thread and someone made it and made me moderator.

I tried to do it for like a day and got like 200 subs but got bored.

The idea was decent. It would be a place where you would post updates about news stories that were forgotten about. My original idea was to follow up on all those cutting edge technology articles that seem to pop up and then are forgotten.

But like, I didn't have the content to provide to get it going.

I've noticed a trend on reddit where subreddit mods typically don't over-moderate per se, but rather they just put way too much fucking thought into it. Regular big wall-of-text threads about the moderating process and whatnot, as well as extreme amounts of deliberation on new rules, how to handle certain types of threads that have become "too popular", etc. It's all just so cringey like they think they're running a company or that they're the SCOTUS and not a fucking bulletin board for nerds.

Yes I would like that because I want to fix up the sub and make it a little nice and also get flairs going for our sub.
