again, another movie in the "series" that didn't really start as a Cloverfield movie but will pretty much be part of the Cloverfield universe...why do they keep doing this? why not make an official sequel to Cloverfield instead of re-purposing other movies as Cloverfield movies?

Be that as it may, they obviously think the Cloverfield name is big enough to start a franchise with. why not...actually make a TRUE sequel to the original instead of just taking other movies and slapping the Cloverfield name on them? it had so much potential...

It was.
I started as this low budget thriller called the cellar or something. It became difficult to put out over time because that portion of Paramount that was doing those low budget films ended going under.
So J.J. got the movie one day, threw more money into it (which is apparent at the end of the movie), gave it a codename and revealed it as a secret Cloverfield movie in a trailer for that one Michael Bay film that came out a few years ago.

I'm not sure how similarly the process was for this movie. I've heard and read about God Particles a while back but this is the first that I'm finding out that it's a Cloverfield movie.

I liked it, but I thought it could have been way better. MEW's character was way too smart for the movie. Which was cool for once in these kind of thriller movies but a little difficult to believe at time because of how capable she was.
Like, managing to overwhelm John Goodman and escape? Okay sure. Taking down an alien space ship? Come on now...

She's the ultimate survival-horror character.

Not a single Die Hard movie was supposed to be a Die Hard movie. Not even the first one.

It is based on Roderick Thorp's 1979 novel Nothing Lasts Forever, the sequel to 1966's The Detective, adapted into a 1968 film of the same name starring Frank Sinatra. Fox was contractually obligated to offer Sinatra the lead role in Die Hard, but he turned it down; after Arnold Schwarzenegger declined to shoot the film as a sequel to his 1985 action film Commando, Fox reluctantly gave the role to Willis, then known as a comedic television actor.

Its like, after the first movie people were hoping a sequel would answer questions...where is the monster from, what caused it, what happened.....Now it just seems to be an alien invasion angle which has nothing to do with any of the clues or potential ideas from the original movie...and its funny because Abrams claimed to want to create a real monster with longevity and a true origin story....now he just seems to be along for the ride.

It was popularly believed that the events of the first movie is what's taking place off screen in the second one. Even all the marketing played that angle up and J.J. himself said that both films are related. But there are lots of aspects of 10CL that pokes holes into that narrative. They might be unintentional though.
So really, it seems like an anthology film series but hopefully:

i mean maybe they attempted to rework the story to make it seem that way but its known that 10 Cloverfield Lane didn't start as a Cloverfield movie at all. it was its own thing that was shoehorned in to the Cloverfield universe at the end of its production.

What's going on with "Clover"? I thought it was supposed to be the next Godzilla....what's it up to? Where did it come from? none of this pertains to that at all...

I don't have faith in originality when it comes to Hollywood; but if this turns out that Earth somehow teleported to another place in the galaxy and the aliens weren't invading but defending themselves from a random planet appearing in their own galaxy...mind blown.

I don't think Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane need to be related. I'm fine with it being an anthology series. There's a distinct theme of it being about a small scale story set in a story that would typically have a massive scope.

How the hell would you make a sequel to the first one? There are really only three things you could do.

1. Nuke didn't kill the creature.
2. Same event but from different characters' pov.
3. Creature was really just a baby! Here's mom!

The first idea is stupid and the second one is pointless. Ultimately the third one would be too, because it would be more of the same.

Honestly, the best way to make a Cloverfield series would be to make all the movies happen to the same fucking unlucky planet. Ocean creature, aliens, moving planet... hell, might as well stick Cabin in the Woods in there too.

Either that or turn it into an SCP-like series.
