What's holding the Middle East back is not Islam, but dictatorship... The region's worst problems emanate from Riyadh and Tehran, not the Qur'an. Democracy and freedom are withheld from the people, and religious fundamentalism substituted to be wielded as a dictators' cudgel to keep the masses in line.

The demonstrations in Iran are evidence that dictatorship in the Middle East is unsustainable and unstable. The present system won't last; the way to the past is impossible; the road to the future is blocked. Something has to give. Unfortunately, America has no shortage of imperialists who believe dictatorship is fine if it means catering to "American interests," and even more disciples of the alt-right who think Islam is incongruous with democracy, and what Muslims need is an overlord to crack the whip. The reality is, in nations where dictators have accommodated demonstrations like this, we've seen a flourishing of democracy (Tunisia); only in countries where dictators reacted violently have we seen terrorism, civil war, and destruction (Libya, Syria).

Peace won't come to the Middle East until the dictators who rule give the people the freedom and human rights they deserve.
