No kidding, every thing is dirt cheap. I went to one of the fanciest fine dining restaurants, and it was an all-you-can-eat buffet of prime meat, cook on-demand orders, seafood, and such for only $30 per person, which would probably cost like $200 in north america.

The hotel I went was around $12 as well with literally free breakfast. You can live like a king in Bangkok

Thailand is safer than the majority of places in South/Central America. The only real danger in Thailand is driving on the roads. As long as you stay out of slummy areas you'll never feel unsafe at night. I regularly go for late night walks and have never felt unsafe.

TC. Where do you want to stay? Chiang Mai is my suggestion. Cooler weather, great food, cheap food and housing isn't too bad ($4000USD will get you a nice 1 bedroom condo).

Being black won't be much of an issue. They'll be able to tell you're American and not Nigerian as soon as they hear you speak and they'll be less racist towards you basically. My boss is from Zimbabwe and I had a few black friends in Chiang Mai (British and Americans) and they said it hasn't been too bad.

You'll have ignorant dumbasses of course but those are the same Thais who are racist towards their own people (darker skinned Thais are considered less attractive). The majority of people will treat you just like anyone else. My Zimbabwean friend has 2 daughters who are half Thai but look mostly African and have afros at 1.5/2.5 years old. Thais absolutely love those little girls everywhere they go.

I was thinking somewhere near Pattaya City since I plan on going there often. But honestly I don't know yet. I will look into Chiang Mai.

TC, I don't speak the language but have been here the better part of 5 years. If you're in places that are tourist hubs you'll be fine. Not everyone will speak English (the majority actually) but you'll be OK. Just get a sim card that way you can use GPS to get everywhere.

I'd personally avoid Pattaya though, it's sex tourist central. Chiang Mai and the islands have far better night life for a single male who isn't looking for hookers. It's a very seedy place and it's not really hidden. The beaches there suck and it's one of the biggest target areas for scams. Plus you have a large concentration of Russians and it tends to cause a lot of problems if you go to bars they frequent or run (big Russian mob presence in Pattaya).

Also, how long do you plan on going for and do you have enough money to sustain yourself for a while or will you work? You can fairly good in many places on $1200 per month.

The first few months you'll definitely spend much more than that so you have to make sure you budget it right. The cost of living is definitely cheap but expenses can quickly jump up on you here, especially if you like to party.

If you're a Native English Speaker and have a degree (tbh, you don't need it but it makes it a lot easier, I don't have one) you can come to Thailand and teach English. You'll work 15-20 hours per week and make on average $1000-$1300usd per month depending on your qualifications, the location, etc.

If you're from North America you would be highly sought after by schools and you'll live quite comfortably on that salary. You can also tutor on the side.

Yea but you can get hookers in virtually every city in Thailand without the placing being full of 60+ year old fat European men in cargo shorts, flip flops and collared shirts. Pattaya is simply a really seedy place. If you want hookers and have fun then just go to Phuket.

Not in the slightest. Get a TEFL certificate, you can do that within Thailand. Once you have that you can directly apply to schools or have an agent find you the job. I work through an agent because I have no degree and they tend to know the loop holes you can use to work without one (by law you're supposed to).

They are desperate for English teachers and you'd most likely have a job within a week of looking for one.

But I only wanted to go to Pattaya because that was the place featured in most of the nightlife YouTube videos I've watched. I'm not attached to the place at all so if Phuket is better I'll go there instead.

I plan to visit a couple of times before I make the decision to move or not to move there. Each visit spanning maybe a week or two.

If I do move there I will save up a decent amount beforehand (5k?) and work online to sustain myself. Now what that work will be has yet to be determined. I'll be saving at my current job while I check out my options.

I like to party but I don't drink so I think that will eliminate a lot of the expenses. I also won't go out often, once a week maybe twice at the most.
