I think it's a combination of it being more widely recognized and diagnosed as well as life getting more and more complicated than it was in the past

There's a variety of factors such as is the rate really higher or is it just being diagnosed more effectively?
Also being poor puts you at a statistically significantly higher risk, and with the ever declining middle class it's just getting worse. Obviously when you're living paycheck to paycheck, struggling to make it by that can lead to anxiety disorders and panic attacks. As well as people without solid structure and a predictable direction. We're biologically designed to fear the unknown, when you're uncertain of your future, your job security, relationships, etc. It can cause it as well.

Honestly it's just an extremely stressful time to be alive in ways previous generations didn't necessarily have to deal with making it even more common now.

People are just talking about it more, thats all. Might lead to more false self-diagnosis but overall I dont think its actually increased, just openness about it.

This along with poor parenting.
99% of every generation of people want to blame their parents than accept responsibility. You're doing nothing new. A small percentage of the whole are actually subject to parenting that scars them mentally, emotionally and/or physically.

The general atmosphere of today is much more bleak and panicky, and not to sound cliche but the news media is largely responsible for that (those are the stories that sell). Social media compounds on that and makes it seem even more prevalent.

This is for anxiety in general. For social anxiety, it's pretty obvious to most people that our increasingly solitary technological lives are the root of it, or at least making existing socially phobic issues worse.

I think people are overly connected to the news, and the news is doing a better job at making every little thing seem like a major threat, this goes for both real news and fake news. There are some legitimate things to be anxious about, though.

People are scared all the time, and a lot of the men act like pussies. Without positive male leadership in the form of good fathers and family men, friends, and neighbors, people suffer. Everyone, even the biggest badass, likes to look up to someone sometime in their life. Something to emulate that gives them self worth and a purpose. There are fewer and fewer impressive men to aspire to be like, so negative role models fill the vacuum. And everyone feels the negative ripple effects.

One of my biggest strengths was always my father. He's a total badass, so I don't feel inferior to anyone. Don't give a fuck. As time went on and he took the easy way out too many times, I had to go in my own direction. One thing that stupid movie Fight Club was right about was a generation of men raised primarily by women. And they're mentally ill, not Just because of that, but in part. The balance of a good mother and father could NEVER be overstated. 'Nuclear family'. That's going to happen less in our time, you can see it everywhere.

I often wonder about this stuff. Like, I've never been big on conspiracy theories, but seriously what's in the water?? Is there really some way the government doesn't know these huge problems with society exist? Or the more like answer that they don't care/induce it in fact. I don't mean left wing or right wing. I mean ALL our leaders in general. Why don't they lead us at all?

anxiety is worse than depression, and i was clinically diagnosed with both major depression and panic disorder. i'm not some armchair psychiatrist that is talking shit. but what i know is that anxiety is considerably worse than depression, because depression is like a heavy feeling on my back that i've grown accustomed to carrying so much that i can generally burden it.

anxiety is like a bullet to the brain, a raging fire in my head that hits almost instantaneously at times. it's like an emotional heart attack, it absolutely wrecks me when i have a panic attack. the last time i had one i couldn't sleep for two days, and it took two trips to the e.r. and several flavors of downers to calm me enough to finally get some rest.

anxiety, real anxiety, is absolutely dreadful. my brain acts and thinks in a way that i know i should have more control over, but my brain compels me to feel the way i do during those times and i mostly end up on the floor, screaming.
