Its funny. Soldiers dont piss themselves when they go overseas. They never fear for their lives when they see a civilian on the street touch their waist. And there could potentially be a terrorist around the corner at any moment. Think about that.

Its almost as if a multitude of cops are not only failed academics that would explain their ineptitude, but they seem to be failed soldiers that would explain their cowardice.

The solution is when we reform our police entry requirements. Its that simple.

Eh, Ive heard a lot on the contrary. Police forces love retired military, because they're often well trained with firearms and have been in stressful situations. Yet, some have been known to be a bit more trigger happy as their instincts they've honed overseas made them that way.

However, Ive also seen opposite be the same where they complain about the generation of cops not being used to stressful situations, like school yard fights, and they pull the trigger faster because they're scared of the conflict.

Police need to be a good mix of both, but the world's not perfect and most forces seem to be struggling to get proper numbers in their ranks.

that's exactly one case and i've never attempted to defend that at all. once again i have to state the obvious that of course there's going to be shitty people but in cases like this there's little the cops can do that wouldn't put their lives in danger

are they just supposed to give a calm knock on the door and just really hope it was a prank call?

how would you train for "murder turned hostage situation with aggressive perp?"

Include consideration of this prank that has received popularity in recent years and assess more before resorting to lethal force. In general, there has to be a system of practice that takes into account civilians acting imperfectly.

It's pretty obvious that taxpayers do not want a police force that is this knee-jerk with all the outcry about the plethora of stories like this.

i'd say they need stricter punishments for the people that do it as deterrence. there are legitimate hostage situations that have no other solution than what occurred here, you can't have you police forces training for these events as if they're some kind of joke.

That only addresses swatting. Unarmed people getting shot is a much broader issue. Have you seen the Daniel Shaver video?

You're going too far with your interpretation of what we're advocating. Of course nobody is suggesting police train for dangerous situations without taking them seriously. We're saying it should take more to shoot someone because civilians are not trained and will behave imperfectly, so there needs to be a better system that accounts for this and doesn't let an officer shoot a harmless drunk guy who reaches down to pull his shorts up.

Shut up. He wasnt involved and had no idea what was going on. He stepped outside to assess the station. A bunch of dudes dressed in black, has no idea what they were doing might not have even immediately put together that they were cops...but its his fault for not putting his hands up within seconds of all that. Not the trained officer. Its the confused persons fault. Fuck off. Im not saying the cop should be put on trial and given 25 to life. Im saying we should expect better and not be expected to coddle THEM (especially when we have no idea whats going on)

But that's the problem, The information is wrong. If you can't take actions to verify the situation before you act on it, isn't that problematic?

Even the more reason to have at least EMTs on scene to treat potential victims...

Also I just saw the footage. While the cop theoretically is justified in his actions, the circumstances are still pretty absurd - they've got blinding flashlights on the guy, even if he did have a gun and pulled it out, the odds of him hitting anything are so slim.
