I imagine you'd get widely different results based on whether the group doing the polling was conservative or liberal in nature. ConPoll finds that 60% of Americans believe the flag represents "freedom" and "soldiers who died for our country." LibPoll finds that 70% of Americans believe the flag represents "the US government" or else "has no great symbolic value."

Of course, those results easily be the inverse a lot of pollers like to post those doomsday results. LibPoll might say that 60% of white middle class Americans are brainwashed into deifying the flag and the troops or you could get ConPoll claiming that 70% of Americans have turned their back on God and country. (And apple pie!)
