Prankster needs like 5 years max. SWAT guy who shot him needs to be properly punished for shooting for no particularly reason.

The guy who got swatted was not involved in any of it. One of the players provided a false address.

Filing a false report is a crime and this should be treated as such. Since it ended in death, heap a murder charge onto the creep too.

If you want to prank someone, then be at least half decent about it. Stop and ask yourself, could I cost another human being their life by doing this dumb ass thing I'm about to do? If yes, then stop, shut it down and go order them a pizza or something.

I did a Google and found this:

Consequences for Filing a False Police Report

Depending upon the jurisdiction, a false police report may be charged as a misdemeanor or a felony. Misdemeanor charges may result in jail terms of one year or less. Typically, the defendant must also pay fines. If a person is charged with a felony, they may be looking at more than a year in jail and substantial fines. The person who made the false report may also be liable in a civil suit, such as if their report caused damage to another's reputation.

At the federal level, the consequences become even more serious. A false report that involves terrorism is treated the most severely, with prison terms of between seven and 20 years being common. The courts may also consider a false report of terrorism as a violent crime even if no violence occurred.

https://thelawdictionary.org/article/what-happens-when-you-file-a-false-police-report/

I'd hope they'd find a way to have a hostage situation be similar to a terrorist situation, but that might be a stretch

swatting is not a prank, it is attempted murder
anything can go wrong and get the victim shot during the process so by swatting someone you are knowingly endangering their life and do deserve to be charged with murder

Here comes everyone with an anti-cop hard-on.

It's almost as if the police were completely lied to about the situation and were thoroughly expecting hostility as a result.

cops responded to his Wichita home amid a false report that he had shot his father to death and was now holding his mother, brother and sister hostage.

Nah, let's blame the cop for being given false information by some shitstain on society.

Or we can blame them both. It kind of is their job to assess the situation not instantly fire at first sight because they thought it would be hostile. I blame the person who made the call more but the actions of the cops arent ones we should disregard and never question.

So what youre saying is someone could call the cops to my house right now and say I think he might kill me and the cop can show up and just shoot me instantly because he thought I might hurt him? What kind of logic is that?

What is really amazing to me is how this is handled in a country, presumably British, as opposed to how it's handled in the States. Like why do cops almost always escalate these things to the max?

This really. Assholes always think its funny to pull this dangerous shit and now someone is dead because of it and they should use this clown to make an example that swatting is not okay. And the cops too, I don't know police protocol or any of that so maybe I'm off base, but: "Livingston declined to comment on what triggered the officer to open fire and would not say whether Finch was armed" sounds super shady.

the cop isnt an asshole in this situation
lots of things can go wrong on the job and they are taught to shoot to kill if they feel they have to
they went there to rescue a hostage. its completely possible the victim panicked and made a sudden movie that looked like he was reaching for a weapon causing the cop to react the way he is trained to react.

the only one at fault here is the guy who called them in the first place

With 400 swats a year, it was always a matter of time something goes wrong. The cops handled the other 399 situations correctly, but not this one.

I feel bad for the police officer and I feel terrible for the man who got killed. The caller needs to be arrested and thrown in jail for at least 20 years.

You guys are talking about two different people.

We can all agree the kid is an asshole.

It's harder imo to come to that conclusion about the cop. It's very easy to get emotional and say the cop's an asshole, too. But the cops were operating on information that they were going to a really dangerous house and as was pointed out we don't know what happened there, so imo better to pass judgment after an investigation is done.

What possibly could have went down in that encounter? He was an innocent dude who had no idea what was happening and has no reason to act out. You think he suddenly just rushed the cop or something? What more likely happened is the cop went in trigger happy because he expected a hostile situation or saw a cell phone and thought it was a gun.

The person who placed the call deserves more blame. Unless the man pulled out a gun or attacked the cops (which doesnt seem likely) then the cop deserves some blame too. I just find it hard to believe that the situation was actually intense enough to warrant an instant shot like that. It was perceived to be, most likely, but cops should have better judgement.

I get that. But that shouldnt be justification. You need to understand the severity of the job you chose. If a Dr is performing serious surgery on A family member and he fucks up can I just say man...it was a difficult surgery. He was probably nervous...no. We expect more of them. I understand the cop will be on edge but better judgement overall still needs to be used. We seem to expect that from every profession except the police.

According to other reports, it was a multiple hostage situation with one person killed already. The police are trained to shoot the hostage taker, which was probably mistaken for the person who opened the door.

The caller is a serial swatter. It's not the first time he swatted someone and this time it got fatal. He need to be tracked down and throw in jail.
