It's interesting. They'll eat products that came from a cow's udder, but won't eat a cricket on a stick as seen in east asia.

Further interesting when you consider that the expensive lobster is basically the cockroach of the sea.

I'd be more open to eating bugs in dishes where they don't still look like bugs. That's the main issue for me. Milk has an easy disconnect. Even meat doesn't tend to still look like the animal. It looks like meat. Whereas a cricket on a stick looks like a cricket...on a stick

Insects are generally seen as disgusting, filth-ridden, poop-eating disease carriers over here.

Also, insects are animals.

When eating insects you eat the whole thing, when eating animals you're eating specific parts.

Even with stuff like shrimp, we cut the digestive tract out.

I've wondered this as well, especially living in the South where we eat mudbugs (crawfish) for the entire Spring season.

Crawfish (or whatever preferred nomenclature) are okay but people that eat the guts n everything, fucking eww.

I never said they were insects, but they do have insect-features which would make it a small leap to actual insects.

Hence the nickname ^_^

I've never actually eaten them myself

How?!

Anyways, anyone recall the euphemism for the guts and innards of crustaceans is again? I've been trying to recall the term for like the last 15 minutes now and it's driving me nuts.

Yeah I'm from the south and I don't fuck with crawfish. Well, full-bodied ones. If the meat is already separated then it's fine.

Crawfish boils look as appealing as eating a bunch of cockroaches

Humans have a natural stigma against insects because they represent disease and decay. Other arthropods (crustaceans and...well just crustaceans) aren't associated with these things at all.

So the real question is how did some Asian cultures remove that stigma, not why others have it.

Crawfish aren't bugs. I wouldn't eat them either. I don't like the taste of shellfish.

Like you said, we in the West do like to eat bugs, but strangely only the ones that live in the sea and have gills. Perhaps toe biters taste just as good when smothered in tartar sauce?

I've eaten chocolate covered bugs. That's easier because the chocolate disguises the bugs appearance.

Flat out eating s grasshopper? Fuck that.

We have vegetarians and vegans in the West, so yes, a number of people here find it unacceptable to consume animals as well. And don't say that's some kind of pretentious lifestyle that's a byproduct of Western culture or politics. The population of India is mostly vegetarian.

I mean, at that point you're just eating the chocolate. It's like when something is fried, you're no longer really eating the food you're just eating the batter.

Yeah that's fair. I semi-regularly eat mussels, clams, and so forth, and would probably eat sea snails, but find regular escargot to be gross. I think it's the salt that makes the seafood all good tasting, because I dislike freshwater fish.
