When you get to the part of the story that has a timed escape, don't leave until the last 5 seconds on the timer.

Umaro is useless
The postgame bonus dungeon sucks
Gau is useless unless you get a very specific set of Rages for him
MBlock is OP as fuck (think that was fixed in the GBA version though)
Shadow sucks past the first time you get to use him
Try not to level up too much until you get Espers, since leveling up with an Esper equipped rewards you with additional stat bonuses

Midgame SPOILERS!

When you reach the floating continent, there will be a timed escape. If you dont wait until the timer reaches 5 second, then you will miss out on Shadow as a playable character the rest of the game
