They have Shields blocking the shots, but weren't regular fighters getting close to the ship and attacking? For example when the bridge got hit and when the hanger got hit.

Or are the shields very localized and they don't protect the full ship

I think fighters can fly below the shields range and attack up close.

Don't know about Star Wars but shields in Halo only activate when a projectile moving fast enough hits them. Don't know how common this explanation is in sci-fi but it could be the case.

I think that the way it works is that shields can protect against lasers and blasters, but can't protect against physical objects like ships and torpedoes, or at the very least the latter quickly drains them or are only able to be projected over limited areas. Except for massive and expensive projections.

Star Wars as a whole has never been consistent on this one.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

The ship was being hit with projectile type weapons though wasn't it? The passenger ships at the end were being hit with what looked like energy weapons

Shields cover the ship in a circular fashion X feet away from the ship's shield generator. The shields only absorb projectiles/energy that are traveling over a certain velocity, which is why ships are able to fly through them

They were firing the typical laser projectiles from a distance. But due to the range the shield could deflect them no problem.

The passenger ships couldn't withstand them though. Either because they didn't have shields or they were too small to generate strong ones.

space magic

ships being able to fly through shields is contradictory to RotJ isn't it
