Family Guy kind of started by embracing the 90's inept father meme, turning and then turning everything up to 11. And I don't think it's ever changed up it's formula. Even at the Simpsons most edgy you'd never see them do a 'hur dur domestic violence' joke, while Family will literally cut away from their main plots to do exactly that. That kind of narrative non-sequitur so was rare in the Simpson's you likely remember some specific examples from those earlier seasons. Can you say the same for Family Guy? I'm not disagreeing that both of these shows are basically over, but one of them had something and lost it to time, and the other may have never had it in the first place, but had a way with edgy spectacle that kept people tuning in and checking out. --- Whatever happened to standards?
