Finn started off a deserter.
He deserts the First Order because they're evil.
He deserts the Resistance because they stand no chance against the FO.
He only cares about himself and Rey, even at the end of The Force Awakens.
It's because of Rose and Canto Bight that he figures out what the Resistance is fighting for and fully embraces himself as a Resistance soldier, even going so far as to sacrifice himself (foolhardily) for the cause.

This is it really. It was solely about his character development. Which will lead to the next movie.

Also to show off a new planet and to give some context to the kid at the end discovering the Force. I think we'll see the Codebreaker again too.

I absolutely did not like Poe and the admiral lady in TLJ. He got a ton of people killed and should have been more than demoted when he got back. The only reason I can think of for why he wasn't thrown in the brig or worse was because they had so few people left and because he was a symbol after helping take down that super Death Star. As for the lady, if you're not going to lock Poe up, tell him you have a plan and explain so that he won't do something reckless which he is almost certainly going to do. At the very least, tell somebody something when they start threatening to mutiny since that means a TON of people are doubting you.

I don't even know how you can start an escape plan without informing the people who are escaping since they need time to get everything ready... but yeah, the entire reason they were discovered is because Poe wasn't clued in on the plan and thought she was just running away; if she told him, Finn and Rose wouldn't have left the ship and the First Order would never have found out until they were already safe. Well, that's not even a guarantee I suppose since, unless Leia goes down with the ship, Kylo will definitely sense that she wasn't killed. Now, depending on how long it takes them to realize it, the Resistance may be able to escape or call in some reinforcements, but that is somewhat questionable. The plan called for them to make another jump into lightspeed after all the ships were safely off the ship in order to distract the First Order, but whose to say they wouldn't just jump right back to their last jump point once they realize they've been tricked---then the obvious next step would be to check the planets they passed while tailing the ship.

Of course, that could just be giving the First Order too much credit and they could be too dumb to figure out where they need to check.

Oh, also, Phasma was such a dumb character, no threat level at all. She may as well have stayed gone after TFA since she just came back to get her butt kicked again.

Well it shows that not every crazy plan ends up magically working out. This time their plan just fucked up and fell on its face.

Daily reminder that the dreadnought was mere seconds from blowing away the capital ship when Poe's suicide bomb run took it out.

I agree and I've been trying to think of a different way to use Finn and Poe in this movie while keeping all the great Kylo/Rey/Luke stuff but it is surprisingly hard without just giving them a random fetch-quest to do.

It's stylistically designed to be that way. And you can't undo that. But we can diminish the effects of it.

The point is, like if you paint your house white and somebody comes over, 'Well that should be a green house.' Well, fine, but I wanted to paint it white. I don't think there was anything wrong with painting it white. I don't think there's anything wrong with me for painting it white. Maybe it should be a green house, but I didn't want it to be a green house. I wanted it to be a white house.

The point of it seems to be giving Finn rose and pairing Rey with someone else and setting up the resistance rebuild and Rey rebuilding the jedi with showing force sensitive people are alive and Luke's story spreading through the galaxy. As well as their version of a catina scene. Yes, Finn could have done something more for his character, but the fact that the mission failed doesn't make it pointless. It adds to how hopeless the resistance is before Luke brings the spark.

yeah, and im starting to see that their story ties into Poe's actions and how him and his 'rebels' (within the rebels) were tied to the success of Finn. Poe was banking on their success, even though it was a super long shot. they took a huge risk and failed.

the entire plot involving Finn had no point. it doesn't change anything with respect to the main plot and it doesn't evolve or change the characters in any meaningful way.

Everything you just said was wrong.

thanks for the riveting discussion

agreed. i kinda think that was Johnson's way of telling Abrams the character was stupid, trying to write her off for good.

I thought the entire point of having him in the movie was that he's black and they could shoehorn in some gay shit with him.

The diversity that is real life is boring to me. When I watch a movie I just want to be entertained.

Where do I say that I dislike him being black? Are you one of those turds that see racism everywhere?
I did imply that I dislike the gay shit, but yeah, I find most if not all romance in movies tacked on and boring. Them being gay doesn't make it interesting in the slightest.

Kind of moot point since the only reason the capital ship was hanging around still was because it was waiting for the ships from Poes attack mission to return. They could have jumped to lightspeed prior to that if they werent stuck waiting around. Poe put them in an even more danger by forcing then to make the decision to either wait around for the squadron to return, or leave and abandon the squadron to be killed off by the First Order.
