I've noticed that most people who say they don't like the Beatles haven't really listened to their music seriously

I didn't say I don't like them. In fact, I've listened to pretty much their entire output. I just finally came to the realization that ABBA is better.

I don't know if I would say that but once you dig under the corny facade it's really interesting to see just how incredibly complex and sophisticated ABBAs music was.

To me, the Beatles just keep sounding better and better since modern music just keeps getting worse and worse.

I think when people say things like this what they really mean (consciously or not) is "I dislike that the genres I'm not overly fond of are more popular than the ones I like".

There's no end to stunning contemporary music if you're prepared to look for it, it's just not being played on mainstream radio very much.

I can agree with this. Id rather listen to any of Lennons or McCartneys solo work than the Beatles.

Maybe, but I don't fully know what you mean by this.

I am pretty critical of modern entertainment/art in general. And I feel most of that is because the market has shifted.

For example, I've noticed the way most people listen to music these days....casually. It seems like for most people it's just background music. People don't just sit in there living room, crank up a set of nice speakers, tell everyone to shut the fuck up, and then just listen to the music, play some air guitar, sing along, and just totally get into it. People tend to be doing something else while listening to music. Therefore, today's popular music tends to be geared toward casual listening, and that's why it's slowly lost it's cutting edge over the years.

Counter argument: people haven't changed at all. Those casual listeners? Back in the 60s they were people who didn't take part in music, didn't go to shows and just occasionally turned on the radio and listened to Leonard Cohen. People like my mother, who still listens to the same like, 5 albums she has done since she was 20.

I think most people have always been only casual, passive music listeners. The only difference is that now people have unfettered access to it all the time.
