Because those are the distinctions people typically make in terms of race. Just like how they split up white people and middle-easterners when they're both Caucasian.

Because both Indians and east asians make more money than white people on average and even when you add places like Laos into the average they still make more than whites in the US

There are many millions more working and lower class whites. Asians and Indians are a drop in the ocean of the American population with a higher concentration of people per capita focusing on certain careers. Their average blah blah means nothing when you're counting in the multitudes of poor whites. If you compare white people with similar education and careers they handily out earn and out rank Asians and Indians.

It's just what people want to see at the moment. I'm Italian so I'm white, if you changed that by a a few hundred miles I could be Hispanic, middle Eastern, etc.

The places aren't very far apart, but people are conditioned to act like they're a world away.
