The prequel and the game are dank too. The all have the exact same title and are all canon too.

Eh, I played the game and was sorely disappointed, ultimately ended up giving my copy away to someone else after I beat once.

As for the prequel, I didn't even bother with it once I heard all the creature effects were done in CGI.

The Thing is a 10/10 movie.

The prequel was fine, IMO. Not as good, but good.

My only problem with the prequel was that at first they promised "practical effects", to stay true to the original and instead opted for cgi instead.

This.

But from what I've read, they shot the film mostly with practical effects and then taped cgi over them behind the effects guys' backs.

Wish I could see that version.

prequel is pretty solid besides a few characters miraculously living and the space ship scene being shit. other than that, it's good.

phenomenal first film, though.

I've always heard it as they did it first with practical effects, then the studio interjected and demanded that they go back and redo it all with CGI.

The Xbox game was way ahead of its time. The tech was limited, and Id love to se it done on new consoles. There were trust and sanity meters and some people would be the alien. If you gave somebody a flamethrower, for instance, they had your back no matter what. Itd also raise their sanity a bit, as they felt safer. If someone saw some stuff, they might crack and just attack you. I had one guy go nuts and the guy who trusted me killed him... You played as the rescue team sent immediately following the 80s movie.

John Carpenter's The Thing is fantastic all around, but maybe what impresses me the most is that it is almost 40 years old and has held up so well.

Wonder how that movie would turn out if they went with practical effects instead, because those look pretty cool.

Universal forced not only all of that shitty CGI in the prequel, they also changed the ending.

The ship was supposed to be full of thousands of different species that one alien (hidden behind that pixel mess because the studio hated the design) had collected - the Thing being one of them but it escaped.

I also lile how the hateful 8 pays tribute to it as well. It's got music from the first movie, the setting it very similar, the sense than anyone could be the bad guy, and it's even got kurt russell.

It's good, but in a very different sort of way. The alien in the first version is sort of an extraterrestrial Frankenstein monster and the film deals more with ideological differences rather than paranoia.
