I had no idea, usually they send you a letter when it's time to renew but I didn't get one. They also breath tested me, drug swabbed me and searched my car because of my history. Show the court the paper that shows that the tags were valid on the day you were stopped. If you lost it, just request another from the county clerk. The citation should be dismissed, but it may stand simply because its supposed to be on your plate. For license renewal you can do it online but apparently you still need to pass a vision test and fill out a form which looks incredibly easy, you can also renew it at any time as long as it expires within a year. I did sign up for the email notifications for inspections last year so IDK how well it works, I can understand that expiring since the registration is good for 2 years but the inspection only 1.
