Its hard to use, slow on phones, people post threads with just a title and no context and somehow get 1000 replies, most discussions are derailed by someone makijg a joke and everyone replying to it

So what makes Reddit of all places so popular?

Maybe the topics. They are a lot. And they stay forever. Even if you can't respond because it's been closed. Here, they usually only stay for so long. On this board, at least. And it's divided here. By game, normally. Also, I think it gets more exposure.

Because the more popular something is, the more garbage it is.

Because there are subreddit communities for anything youre interested in

Most people I see complain about reddit seen to only know about what they see on the front page or r/all

The popularity is probably because you can find a subreddit for just about anything. Granted, that's more of a reason why it maintains popularity than how it became popular. That part I also have a hard time understanding, since I hate the layout. I guess you just have to stop trying to think of it as a message board. It's kind of its own thing.

Reddit is heinously shit but there are some very particular subjects that have subs (like Hackintoshing) so its difficult to ignore.

I guess its because it is an open forum without the stigma of being a video game board or 4chan. It advertises itself as a so called front page of the internet making it pretty neutral and approachable. Your retired miner dad might not be as inclined to look up politics on gamefaqs or 4chan. Bill Gates probably wont touch an ask me anything on potd or even ce.

Reddit was always destined to be garbage thanks to downvoting.

Why did anyone think that would be a positive feature?

Me too. I usually google the subject I'm interested in to find the subreddit

It's a means to an end.

Why are facebook and twitter so popular?

I considered designing a fully anonymous bulletin board a few months ago. Would be a fun side project, with no meaningful impact on the social media landscape.

Also Reddit has very little tolerance for people not being well-learned when talking to them. They seem to hate novices.

It goes in-hand with the downvoting shit. No one learns how to be better on the subject because everyone just snubs them with downvotes and vitriol.

You definitely see that on the more popular subs

One thing that infuriates me is when someone gets downvoted for asking a question

They also downvote anyone who doesnt agree with what ever hivemind the subreddit has, theres no room for actual discussion.

Again thats something you see on the big default subs primarily(which you can conveniently unsubscribe from in favor of more curated communities)

The same type of behavior is prevalent in message boards for popular games

Yeah but the worst you can do is just yell at someone and then it becomes dust in the wind.

Downvotes accumulate and you get to see a rolling tally of how many people think you're a waste of digital air.
