Is the only villain. That means Episode 9 can only end up with his redemption or his demise, or him breaking off with Rey if they choose a morally grey route. But this is Disney so it needs a happy ending.

Now with Snoke out of the way, theres no looming threat. Kylo is a conflicted loose cannon, Hux is a Nazi caricature; who are we supposed to fear? What conflict is there other than between Kylo and Rey?

Episode 8 tied up too many loose ends. ESB was an excellent sequel because it progressed the story naturally and left room for a fitting finale in the third movie. TLJ could have been the end of the trilogy on its own. It left very little conflict for Episode 9 to resolve.

Unless Episode 9 revolves entirely around Kylo and Rey and they craft a new villain out of thin air. Maybe Snoke was a pawn for another Sith Lord who was in hiding?

It really does narrow the endgame down.

Hux has been relegated to comic relief and isn't intimidating.
The Knights of Ren could be Kylo's version of the Praetorian Guard, but they're ultimately just henchmen. Could have some awesome fight scenes but no real weight in the story.
Snoke ain't coming back after what happened. That was explicit.
Phasma was fearsome in TLJ and could be brought back for Episode 9. I think that Rian meant for her death to be definitive, but I'd be on board for her surviving off-screen again. Still, she's got Boba Fett significance at most.

Kylo's the end boss, no question about it.

Hux being the primary antagonist would be like if Admiral Piett was the main villain in RotJ. Not enough character.

Knights of Ren would be interesting. It worried me that there wasnt one mention of them in TLJ but since J.J. is back in control for 9, hopefully well get more insight.

Sidious ghost making an appearance would be laughable in any context other than a brief vision.

The Snoke theory is the best chance the movie has. The Knights of Ren and the Rebellion could team up to take down Plagueis, his new apprentice, and the First Order; that would make a satisfying conclusion.

Yeah, they blew their load way too quickly with 8.

While Im glad Snoke is no longer a threat Kylo isnt very intimidating either, especially after how trolled he was by Luke.

Vader was always interesting because he stood between Luke and the Emperor. Kylo Ren has no real allies now, so thisll get real Disney real fast.

Snoke added a sense of danger to the story. The OT handled it perfectly by having the Emperor be the guy pulling Vaders strings, which emphasized how dangerous he is to the galaxy, let alone the main characters.

Without Snoke, theres no lingering danger. It begins and ends with Kylo. And what damage could he possibly impose upon the galaxy? King Joffrey would make a better commander-in-chief of the First Order than Kylo.

The next sequel will be a leap forward in time. So far into the future that both Rey and Kylo are long dead.

It's a good idea because no will expect that twist.

I wouldnt mind a jump in time honestly. It could account for Leia dying off-screen and establish that Kylo had gone back to the Knights of Ren.

You assume that this story is meant to end at Episode 9

It's clear as fuck at this point that Disney has no idea what the fuck they are doing and also in no way feel the need to stick with convention.

Yeah, probably, but what threat does he pose one-on-one? Hes not a force user, he pretty much shat his pants when Kylo started choking him, and his only discernible character trait is that he yells a lot.
