Right now, I am seeing a screaming buy in GE, and am committing a big chunk of my portfolio to it. I try not to overweight one stock very often, but the GOP tax bill will pass and has inflated the global stock market indexes to very high levels.

GE, meanwhile, has actually deflated and is near its 2011 lows. The tax cut will nearly double its earnings per share, and it's already suffered extreme punishment from investors for its issue in a market where the global indexes have moved in the opposite direction.

I think the tax cut is mostly priced in. GE is one of the few exceptions where it really hasn't been priced in, and when it is, the value of the stock has the potential to dramatically increase.

I'm buying $20,000 of GE stock today and holding for the long term. This is approximately 5% of my overall portfolio; the rest is still invested in the index funds I have always endorsed. I am setting up a limit buy order at $17.50/share and will update it to $17.65 if the stock does not drop to that target this afternoon.

This post is for informational purposes only; if you follow my lead your investment may lose money and I am not liable for any losses.

Time to short the market at-large yet?

Honestly, with the tax bill passing I do expect some selling to occur. But it'd be a huge mistake to short the market at large; the bank of japan is pumping money in and the GOP tax cut is essentially a fiscal quantitative easing effort.

All I have is voo for now. Once my balance grows I will get a couple others. I need to roll my roth401k to my roth ira but it seems like it will be more complicated than i thought.

GE is too much of a mess right now with all the restructuring they have to do still for me to invest in them imo. Probably will take until 2019 at best to start improving so between now and then the stock could drop a little more.

when you assist a client in buying shares do you set up sequential market buys matched to the present ask, or do you just set up large limit orders at the market price?

this is one area that's a bit beyond me.

Neither I nor the people at my firm do this, but back when I worked with people who did, we would just order at present ask. Unless we were told a specific limit price, which rarely happened.

And in the current age, markets are so liquid that it's not even really the ask price, but the market price. It's hard to find savings in lower ask prices, and definitely not worth your time unless you have AI on your side and are buying and selling massive quantities throughout the day.

Are you drunk? wait until there's some form of support before you buy a stock that's been going down for over a year. Won't hurt to wait a few days/weeks.

I bought a ton of Amazon a couple weeks ago... ugh still not sure if it was smart or not.

Also Darkman I had a question for you, I own a lot of my company stock, slowly vesting over a few years. I got about 20% vested now, and I really think I should be divesting some, don't want my job and most my net worth being so closely linked, yada yada.

What do you think about selling covered calls on my stocks? Say my stock is currently at $30, I was going to sell a call at $45 that expires in June. I figure I get to pocket the premium no matter what, and then even if my call hits at $45, I would sell at that point anyway because I want to divest. Seems like a win/win/win situation to me? I guess the only way I would get screwed is if the stock somehow goes up to $60 in that time?

i dont need to buy at the absolute bottom and it's making a series of new 5-year lows.

my last big success was SPY @1920 right before it dropped to 1830

taking some early hits is well worth it for the potential return

selling calls is asking the devil to play golf with your nuts

that said nobody is short right now so you do have the potential for a nice return and reduced risk relative to a normal scenario

Just exited a loooong position a few weeks ago at 18.35. About broke even on it, but that's just a nice way of saying it was dead money

I'd prolly have to see them post a few quarters first where they might be turning it around before I jumped back in

No it's not. This thing might be going down for several more months, maybe even another year and you're guessing that TODAY is the time to buy so you can might get like half a percent more.

seems probable, the tax bill's effect was already priced in anyway

+ i expect a lot of people will be taking profits under the new tax arrangements

that's basically why i am only investing in already beaten-down companies rn

they're less likely to go down with the ship since they've already been drowned
