I'm the network guy at my job, so I'm always on call. If I don't answer it, it gets escalated to my boss.

Depends if I already have something going on. I'm already getting my 35-40 hours and the place shouldn't fall apart because I'm not there.

And if it does then thats on them. They can always call a salary manager to come in.

So if it causes someone did a no call, no show is that ok?

This would only happen at shitty retail jobs. Depends if I had plans or felt like working that day tbh.

Nah, being on call is a thing in higher level positions.

Not at all.

I've worked with some CEOs in the past that are literally on call all the time, constantly working. They would probably laugh at the idea of "a day off" anyway.

i tend to think the whole reason i'm paid what i'm paid is so that when the shit hits the fan i am available to work nonstop to resolve it

It probably does play a role. The further you move up the ladder, the more responsibility and less freedom to do whatever comes into play.

I like to think I'm also a valuable employee because I do the same, as well. I have no kids and a large portion of my life is dedicated to working.

mhm. same. i am often on long phone calls at night when others are with their kids; occasionally on-site at test facilities for an extended period. my wife wilts during those travel days.

I'm always on call, but I would almost never need to come in without proper notice beforehand. Generally, i can just coach someone through any "emergency" over the phone.
