I do think that, from the people I know, they experienced great stress or traumas and that's why they are the way they did. One girl implied that she was raped as a kid.

I think shame is a normal and healthy feeling to have sometimes. And if your waist is a big in circumference as your height, you should feel ashamed.

Not everyone can have a 6 pack and bulging biceps or a tight waist and big juicy ass. But no one should be 5'2" and 330 pounds. Getting there is the result of years of bad choices, often due to ignorance, other times lack of self control and other factors, but yeah. I used to be fat, it sucks. I couldn't physically do a lot of the shit humans should be able to do. I wish some of the people close to me had talked with me about it earlier. I was in constant pain as a fat man and that was in my 20s. Old fat people I can't even imagine how they feel. They are destroying their bodies.

You bring up a good point. Waist circumference is a big indicator of health risk. For men, this should be 40 inches or less. For women, it should be 35 inches or less. Some people are not fat by BMI standards but still carry health risks by having a large waist. My waist is below the standard but I am overweight by BMI standards. I also power lift at least four days a week for at least 1-2 hours per session until complete failure.

That's the thing. Talking with them, especially if it truly comes from a place of concern, is 100% OK and should be encouraged. Calling people "fatty" and "whales" is just childish though IMO and that's what you tend to see more of.

I agree. Some people say that fat people don't deserve respect, but I believe that everyone deserves respect until they give a reason not to respect them.

0 percent of people ragging on fat people on the internet care about their health or well-being. So that angle is ridiculous.

So true. People in general do a lot of unhealthy things. It's just the overweight people that are singled out.

Yeah that excuse is 100% BS and I always call it out when see it. Most of these same people have nothing to say when people do blatantly unhealthy stuff (like smoking for example) but all of a sudden they are on a crusade for health when it's in regards to fat people.

People that smoke and do drugs are called out on it constantly, wtf are you talking about.

Fat people should always be fat shamed....

But when I say that I am talking drastically overweight (morbidly obese), not just "a little big"....

Being that level of fat is NOT acceptable, and should not be acceptable under any circumstances...

The whole fat people movement is a farce...

What I'm saying is that a lot of the same people that constantly talk about how they shame fat people for "health" reasons don't do bother shaming others that do blatantly unhealthy things at nearly the same rate or with the same ferocity, and it's hypocritical. If you constantly fat shame people and smoke cigs everyday, just don't use "I'm worried about their health" as the reason is all I'm saying. I never said that smokers aren't shamed at all.

Okay yeah that's fair. If I saw a smoker shaming a fat person I'd tell them they're full of shit.

I mean, even as widespread as obesity is, the amount it contributes to climate change is probably roughly the same as people having pets contributes to climate change

there are plenty of things we do that contribute to climate change that people aren't shamed for

I think shaming climate change deniers is more about them being stupid than trying to further some kind of greater good

"Bigot" is seriously overused. Just don't be an asshole to people, and don't try to cover it with some tooth-suckingly disingenuous concern about "health".

I mean, I'm a fan of what I jokingly call the "bakery" - buns, rolls and rack - and I'm all about enjoying fine food and drink (and sharing the experience). But it doesn't equate to being a lazy lump. Get fat, get thin, doesn't matter - enjoy life, do stuff. It's not my place to judge someone else's business.

And to be honest I don't think shaming people is effective, but people reaching a feeling of shame on their own, well hopefully they listen and try to find help. Calling them names isn't helping anyone but neither is pretending they are beautiful regardless of size or claiming you can be healthy at every size.

I think we do need mass PSAs on obesity. Its a huge issue. I suspect it is also tied into the mental health crisis as well.

I'm fat for 2 reasons.

1. I don't give a fuck what you think.

2. I don't want to live longer, especially if doing it means being miserable. Some people drive themselves crazy obsessing over their appearance. I'm just not one of those people. I'm a misanthrope.

Bottom line is there is such a thing as quality of life. There will come a point where I wont be able to do the things I want to do for now I'm going to take advantage.

We all get to the point were living means unending pain. The question is how long are you interested in suffering.

Oh yeah I do have a caviat to what I said.

If the obese person is ACTIVELY trying to lose weight, they should be encouraged, not shamed...

QOL is an interesting point. My wife used to work as a nurse in a nursing home. The people who were there who were fat were often considerably younger than their thinner but older counterparts. Bed sores hurt whether you are 35 or 70. I do not know exactly how much extra weight you are carrying, but morbid obesity is a terribly painful way to live.

I kind of feel sad for people who's lives are so terrible they don't care if their bodies are going to start breaking down in their 50s. I work with a lot of elderly and the people who go the mileage in life, who make it to 85, 90, sometimes 95, are always skinny little folks. They're not skinny because they're old, they're old because they're skinny.

Most people sit around on the internet where they can block out anything they don't like to see or hear. It's not surprising that many can't handle criticism. Since sitting around leads to weight gain... Well you can see how it came to this.
