There were several shifts in the story for the ST. GL's original story was about the kids and more importantly Ben Skywalker. This had been known since the 90s. Disney bought the story for 7-12 and then made it seem like everything was going good. But eventually they told Lucas to fuck off and then totally changed the story. At one point, the story for 7 was gonna be about Leia as Luke's first student. Eventually they stuck to what TFA was. Then Rian came and changed things around for 8. And likely, Abrams is gonna change shit around again for IX. There's no consistency. It's obvious Rian didn't like what neither Lucas nor Abrams did.
