Been mulling this one over a bit, and decided to go with it. Might be my favorite Muse song, and it's from their very first album! Most people go right to Origin of Symmetry when talking about Muse I feel, but Showbiz is a super solid album. Honestly might be my favorite from them on some days. Anyway, the title track just has this sick vocal melody that I absolutely adore. The way it sounds so desperate and pleading is great. Early Muse was also just fuckin weird and would do cool ass distortion and guitar shit, and I really love that.

muse is an ok band. i've never really agreed with the people who said they're a "poor man's radiohead" as that's kind of an apples and oranges thing; radiohead is an extremely innovative and adventurous band and muse isn't (nor are they trying to be). but yeah, the distortion in this song is cool. there are way better muse songs but this one is, uh, passable.

i've heard a lot of alan parsons project because my parents are really into them but i think i've mainly heard the earlier stuff, not this song from '84. wasn't expecting this kind of synthpop. as i've said before i love synthpop, but as far as '80s synthpop goes this isn't my favorite kind; i prefer sophisti-pop to this kind of "theme song of an '80s crime drama show" synthpop. still a decent song, though.

thanks for the spotify link, the YT video didn't work for me. this started off sounding like spastic ink but more out there and with vocals, then there was an excellent solo section, and then there was a minute or so of grunting that was kinda bad. uneven song, but i adored the solo section so much that i'd still call it a great song overall. like bubblemath i'd call this a "jazz fusion with vocals" band. but unlike bubblemath i'd never heard of these guys before, so i'm glad you introduced me to them!

props for doing a song by a jazz singer (jazz is sorely underrepresented in this topic series imho) and i actually quite like "christmas music" (meaning what people usually call christmas music, not the song mycro did) but this wasn't one of my favorites in the "genre." i found the drumming too plodding for the most part, and with connick jr. AND the choir AND a huge orchestra this ended up sounding kind of... bloated, i guess? still enjoyable, though.

From about the 3-minute mark to the end might be my favorite part in any Christmas song, and that album is one of the best Christmas albums ever. Like it's not often with a singer's Christmas album that the originals are better than the standards.

sufjan stevens, another name familiar from the iconsience topics. above average song but this isn't my favorite side of sufjan; i prefer his more electronic side to his sparse folky "let the banjo and sleigh bells carry the song" side.

well, if this was the best song released in 2017 i evidently didn't miss much by not following music at all this year >_> thought this was pretty boring. it's a shame because i did like it when it started but it overstays its welcome. would have worked better as a 30 second interlude on an album than a full song.

that was my favorite part of the song too. the drummer did that "not gonna hold back anymore now!" thing (typical of vocal big band songs) and that made it a lot better.

meh, this was ok i guess. in hip hop i'm not a fan of the "changing the beat mid-song" thing they do twice here - the song ends up being a bunch of too short beats that don't add up to much. i don't mind it when the beats are super dope, but i didn't think these beats were. the rapping was pretty good, though.

Somebody Out There - quite fun with the keyboard elements, goes on a bit long maybe but still really enjoyable.

Let It Snow - like the instrumentals, not too sure with the vocals. One of the few times I would want to do without vocals in the song. The ending part with the unclean vocals I actually dig the most of the vocal parts.

When My Heart Finds Christmas - pretty classic sounding christmas song, fits the mood nicely. I've always enjoyed backing chorus on christmas songs too

Did I Make You Cry On Christmas - all around pleasant, just some nifty indie. Sufjan has always been pretty great when it comes to knowing how to make indie folk-ish music.

Chanel - not gonna lie, frank is a bit of a hit or miss for me. There's some shit I loooooove from him and other stuff is kinda meh. I think this one is on the more positive side for me. Main melody for chorus part grew on me.

2 AM- Rapsody is fuckin legit, I remember her spot on To Pimp a Butterfly and how much I loved it. Really like her flow. Funny how she makes a Frank Ocean reference and we got a Frank song this week.

Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer - love it, perfect length too. The hypeman shouts really make it for me.

We Three Kings - just really really pleasant and sounds great all around, from all three individuals. Kind of soulful.

Christmas Nights In Blue - this was fine. Favorite part was the backing piano beat.

Sleigh Ride - solid solid. I quite like August Burns Red, more for their original music but this whole album was a fun little thing that kind of came out of nowhere at the time.

Bleach - ooooooo yes. that hook tho. Favorite lines:
Dont let God see me, I got a lot of demons
And I been sleeping with em
And now Im tangled in the sheets and sinking deeper with em
Im going deeper in it, find me drownin' in it"

that IS better!

it's funny, it sounds like the instrumental version is the "normal version" and the one with vocals is a remix. it's not like the instrumental versions of periphery songs where there's clearly something missing without the vocals (though i like listening to those too).
