My brother just got one for his daughter. He seems to think the watch needs a SIM card. I can't see this being the case, but can you verify? I would imagine you just sync it up with the phone's Bluetooth?

I have an Apple Watch 2 and it uses nothing but Bluetooth, just connects right to my iPhone. Now I can't speak for the 3 because apparently you can make calls and send texts through data without having to have your phone on you, which the 2 can't do

Yeah, my sister has an Apple Watch and it just needs her phone, no SIM card or anything as far as I know. I don't know about other kinds of smart watches though, but it should tell you in the manual.
