seems to me that dems actually have some measure of motivation to dig in on the debt ceiling.

government being forced closed could, potentially, delay a vote on the GOP tax bill until after jones is seated, potentially creating chaos on the result of the vote.

could create a large stock market drop; another shutdown almost certainly would provoke S&P et al to lower our credit rating.

I mean in general why raise the debt ceiling when the debt will mainly go up because of the GOP cutting taxes? Make them live with their choice.

Aren't they passing the tax bill before trying to work on the shutdown budget?

Tax cuts do not cause debt. Spending causes debt.

trying to, but a number of GOP senators are delaying it by making new demans

if they delay past the shutdown discussion, dems have a legit reason to force things closed.

Huh, last I read McConnell had all his votes in hand. Granted that was Saturday, so maybe I missed new developments.

What does it mean that McCain is not going to vote? Do they still need 50 votes + Pence?

Does it even matter how high the debt goes if we're never gonna pay it off anyway?

I'm reading that they're pushing for a vote tonight/early tomorrow morning. A Monday night conference.

Probably to avoid exactly what you were talking about in the OP.

Okay and what's your point?

The debt is still going to rise drastically because they are not cutting their spending.

there's really no indication that anyone has an appetite to kill this bill

I don't think the democratic party understands how to be an effective opposition. No one has told me this directly, but I get the feeling they believe they will be blamed for basically anything bad that happens right now even though they aren't really in the hotseat (or shouldn't be)
