This has happened to me a lot lately.

A while back I was playing Zelda, couldn't beat a certain shrine. Had no idea how to beat it. Was just completely flabbergasted. Tried for like an hour then gave up.

I stopped playing the game for a while(because yay Golf Story), then came back to Zelda, forgetting that the shrine even existed.

Saw I had an unfinished shrine, went to it. Solved in 10 seconds.

One night I was playing Odyssey, and looking for a power moon. I scoured an entire area that i knew it to be in and it just wasn't anywhere. I gave up. Couldn't find it. Powered off.

Next morning I power on, glance around for about 3 seconds, go pick up the moon, and head on my way.

It's some weird phenomenon I recognized ages ago.

Also, you do way better on your first attempt at a hard level than you will on your next several.

No idea why. A few years ago I started saying out loud "huh, this level looks interesting" to try to trick myself into thinking it's my first try.

It actually seems to work sometimes. >_>

All the time.

I think the expectation of a warmup period does a lot to clear the mind and relax, which often turns out to be exactly what's needed.

In the particular case with the Zelda thing, it was sort of a hammer + nail problem.

I thought I was looking at a nail so of course the hammer had to be the solution. Coming in with a fresh mind made me immediately realize there was another option.

I would spend all night getting my ass kick by a boss or some annoying, tedious mission, then I just go to bed after too many loses.

Wake up and beat it like it wasn't that bug of a deal.

A friend was at the final boss for a crash bandicoot game. She died a bunch of times so I tried. I died a few times, and then when I was at 1 hit from dying again I said "oh I know what to do now" and then flawlessly won. I can't remember more details.

When I was a kid I couldn't beat Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts. I tried for an hour one night and couldn't beat him. I went to sleep. Beat him first try the next morning.

it's sort of like complain strats

if you vent to people how a level is too hard and you've been stuck on it forever and can't beat it you inevitably beat it shortly afterward

When I was little, I played Harleys Humongous Adventure on SNES a ton, but could never beat the game. I stopped playing it for a few years then went back to it. Once I got used to the controls again, I beat it repeatedly without much of a problem.

Yeah. It's a psychological phenomenon that happens to everyone. There are major benefits to refresh periods.

BOTW spoilers:

I probably spent 45 minutes trying to figure out how to get past the Lost Woods. I turn it off and come back and immediately figure out I was supposed to be watching the direction the flames blow in the wind. Funny enough, my brother didn't reaslize this when playing and literally just ran through it. Total luck. I had to explain he beat the puzzle without realizing it.
