There is a scene in Star Wars: The Last JediI wont say too much, but you'll see it yourselfwhere a young Asian woman does a brave, selfless thing to help the Resistance. Its a very sweet, very Star Wars Hero Moment, but it's also an important one. Los Angeles Times film writer Jen Yamato called out its significance for fans of color on Twitter, noting films like these leave their mark on entire generationsrepresentation matters. She woke up the next morning to a stream of mentions telling her to stop making everything about race. Her reply? I hope you all enjoy the new Star Wars. The implication was obvious: They won't. The Last Jedi isnt here to appease the old guard.

And that goes for both categories of reactionariesthe Star Wars fan upset that the franchises heroes now include (::clutches pearls::) women and people of color, and the misogynist, racist, classist, dark side of the populace thats always been present, wielding power in one form or another. In themes and plot, The Last Jedi asserts again and again that monolithic dominance isn't good for anyone. The movie isn't here to Make the Galaxy Great Again. It's to tell the stories of the people who want to actually fix it.

It was inevitable that the same excuses we heard about people disliking Ghostbusters would eventually resurface once TLJ started getting slammed. Unfortunate that a movie can't be properly criticized for legitimate flaws without some regressive crying about gender and race.

Imagine agreeing with people that think this movie is worse than The Phantom Menace and as bad as fucking Ghostbusters. Imagine not thinking there are some nerds out there that hate things because they feature women or minorities as leads

Writer shoehorns some racial meaning into a movie.
Gets called out for doing so.
Suddenly everyone is a racist/misogynist/evil/literally Hitler for daring to say stop making everything about race.

It's a good play but I wish people would stop falling for it.

I don't think the diversity really hurt this movie at all, but I take issue with that being used as a shield when a movie is shitty and people are fairly criticizing it. There have been plenty of great "girl power" movies -- Aliens probably being the best example -- that are universally loved because the film was great.

Its not the color or the gender of the characters thats bad, its the characters themselves. Disney literally threw in a black dude and a chick as the protagonists just for the sake of diversity but never actually developed their characters. Or a plot line.

Haven't seen TLJ yet, but is it basically like Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones in that it's an average sci-fi movie on its own, but gets brought down when compared to other Star Wars movies?

tbh, finn is fine, and probably one of/the best character in TFA and while not as great as there, he was still pretty good in TLJ, but Rey in TFA was a bit too sue-ish, but improved in TLJ, as it felt somewhat more earned and realistic.
