The same point of the assault on the door smasher cannon that failed: to artificially reduce the rebellion to a small enough group to fit into the Falcon so the third movie can (yet again) replay the "small rebellion with hopeless odds" storyline.

to add 30 mins to the plot or something. idk, it was boring. But in those few hours they were together Rose went from thinking Finn was a sniveling coward to being in love with him, so deeply in love that she ruined his attempt to save everyone and let the mini death star destroy the rebel base! Good play Rose.
