I know nothing about the series but I know a lot of people like at least II, and I'm looking for an older rpg to play, and I may as well get 1-4 for like $18

Already have 1-3, been wondering the same about 4 myself.
I figure you're probably safe with a PS2 game. By that time, game developers had enough budget and competence that they didn't really make you grind for days on end and go through monotonous dungeons for hours at a time to squeeze length out, loke on far too many of the great classic RPGs from earlier generations. --- ... 4 is less good than the others but still a fun game. Main flaw is that you spend a lot of time sailing which is just a slow way of getting around.

4 is not very good but if all 4 are only $18 Id do it. 2 is my favorite game of all time.

one of the biggest issues with 4 is that you can only have 4 party members fight at a time.
