AOL Instant Messenger is DEAD! Will you miss it?

20 y/o AOL Instant Messenger is no longer operational! You can no longer log in or even go on aim.com...the service credited with the creation of social media has now died. A victim of the Casual Revolution of 2007, the very services it inspired ended up killing it, such as Facebook. Dozens of users that still used the service are saddened by the death of AIM as they cry on social media.

But will you miss this service?

Let's see what the people think.

AIM was pronounced dead at 1:23 am Eastern.

I presume those in the Mountain and Pacific time zones can complain that it died on the 14th >_>

I am kind of sad even though I havent used it in ages tbh.

Kind of like hearing a childhood friend of yours died. You may not have seen him since you were younger, but you remember how you had some good times. RIP sweet prince.

This. I don't miss it in the sense that it going away has any effect on my life, but it is a little sad to see that it is gone.

Is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?

I remember as a teen in the early/mid 2000s, waiting for my dial-up internet to connect and then chatting with all my friends from school on AIM. I remember later on there was a bot you could talk to, I think it was called smarterchild. Then Myspace and Youtube came along, followed by facebook, twitter, and all the rest of the social media websites. I honestly didn't think people still used instant messagers for social reasons anymore (my work, however, utilizes it to communicate).

But yeah, as other people said, AIM, and instant messagers like it, bridged the gap between the message boards and forums of olden days and the social media revolution that took place in the late 2000s.

It was useful for the time that it existed, but it did much what aol did, became an oversized piece of bloatware that had too many ads for it's value.
