Yeah that is one of the saddest things to happen in our country's history.

Just a random weird thought: Isn't it the perfect excuse that you can't question victims of tragedies because it's really insensitive and fucked up to do so?

What the heck does "alt-right" have to do with anything? That wasn't even a term when this incident happened and wouldn't be for years after. A bunch of white people thinking that another bunch of white people faked an incident is somehow racist?

Even if this guy hadn't shot anyone. If he'd stolen the guns, driven to the school, shot the door out and laid down on the ground until the police came and apprehended him- he'd still have committed enough felonies to put him away for the rest of his life. Multiple counts of stealing firearms, transporting stolen firearms, bringing firearms to a school, discharging firearms inside town limits, etc etc etc.

If somebody's reaction to this case is "We need more gun laws!" then you need to seriously reevaluate your worldview. "But we have to do something!!!!!!111111"

in the case of Lanza the family shouldnt even have had weapons around him. he was basically medically documented as mentally unhealthy and both parents knew it as did several doctors.

as far as what laws could have prevented this i wont say that there is a definite one, but i feel harsher penalties and repercussions towards negligence might have given the family a moment of pause and taken the time to rethink their approach to gun safety.

How do you regulate gun theft?

Weren't the guns unsecured (ie not locked up)? Maybe start there. If any gun you own gets linked to a crime then you'll do time. For precedence I cite that "if you lend a car out and they commit a felony you're an accessory" series of laws. Granted there is a difference between lending and having stolen, but the only practical application of a gun is to kill so I think a difference in how things are addressed is reasonable.

point is guns are being replaced with other means of killing and without any real protection you are having a large influx of other types of crimes. britian has more stabbings (and now acid attacks), australia has more home invasions, sweden is currently going through a large rape problem ect. defending your self with a gun in most cases will land you in jail and defending youre property will too.

now thats not to say they are equal. guns have a higher chance to kill, but if you take several factors out of the equation there really isnt much of a gun problem here. most gun deaths are suicide and the second and third method of suicides (hangings and poison) carry a high success rate as well so whose to say if they didnt have a gun they would magically not try to kill themselves? then you have about 60% of homicides are gangs killing themselves over territory and drugs. then another 10% in police shootings of which about 98-99% tend to be justified. then you have another 5-6% being defensive uses. those mass shooter cases like sandy hook are actually relatively rare and only take up around 4% of total homicides.

thats not to say we cant do things to lower these numbers, but the numbers have a LOT more factors to them than just saying getting rid of or severely limiting them will help solve gun deaths. theres too many other problems to take into account.

as far as possible solutions ill quote my self from another thread--make gun safety more obvious and more out there for the public to see, teach kids at a young age the dangers of them and training how to properly handle them (should cut down on accidents), re-instigate a waiting period (should cut down on gun suicides), come up with some sort of no penalty buy back program (why rob a register for $50 when you can turn in that hipoint for $100?), plug up holes in background checks along with a universal system and constantly updated checks on your record (this could have potentially stopped the texas shooter), have firearm related crimes and screw ups carry harsher penalties, make people more aware of the warning signs of mental health problems and how to help fix them(both could have potentially saved sandy hook), help with intercity conflicts and gang issues along with making certain drugs legal and further taxing others which will cut down on the gang conflicts and drug wars. finding some sort of better universal healthcare system in general would also go a long way.

theres a lot of ways to fight the problem, but republicans dont want to try and the dems suggestions are awful and emotionally motivated (and usually further hurting constitutional rights).

This is such a dumbass argument. The reason why trucks are used is because they can't get guns! And even if they do it is incredibly difficult. So clearly something is working there.

If you want to kill someone, there'll always be a way. At least in France you won't be able to do it with 274363 rounds of ammunition...

the owner, for clarity, was his mother.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/26/us/adam-lanza-sandy-hook.html

a lot of mass shootings are tied to domestic violence incidents, or perpetrated by those who have previously committed domestic violence. while it probably wouldn't have stopped sandy hook specifically, stripping convicted domestic abusers of their second amendment rights is likely to save lives.
