Depression isn't always externally caused, in fact it usually isn't, I'd wager. Lots of people have horrible things happen and just keep a stiff upper lip, while guys like me and Owen Wilson have it easy and are all fucked up sometimes. It's all about those genetics...

The fact that I've never had depression or severe anxiety (just normal stress for certain situations) is enough for me to be happy.

I do think they're used as excuses a little too much (doesn't negate actual serious cases) - you've never seemed the type Vegreville.

Yeah, it pisses me off. I literally have a chemical imbalance in my brain and would love to have the luxury of pretending to be broken instead of getting stuck like this. It's not nearly as bad for me as some people have it, but it sucks all the same. I seem like am impulsive free spirit a lot of the time, and when people I meet get to know 100% of who I am, they tend to be shocked. I tried not to make my problems my friends' or coworkers' problems too. Everyone deals with it differently though, so I don't think less of others for venting as needed.

What works for me is just being candid and goofy about my struggles. I will also always try to help anybody going through the same (or similar) stuff I already have or presently am because I care, knowing what it's like.

Most people with actual problems don't try to milk it every chance they get like those who fake or be overly dramatic about their situations. Usually cause the former has dignity while the latter doesn't.

That's partly what makes it hard to gauge though... Some people are dramatic and maybe just need some attention (which is indicative of problems too, honestly) while others will talk about it and actually mean it. People are unpredictable and it's worth taking certain things seriously even if it doesn't seem like it. If the options are "feel like a fool" or "let somebody hurt themselves", the responsible thing is to risk looking gullible and be a good friend if they need one, regardless of why.

Obviously there are circumstances where you have to consider what's best for yourself if they're abusing you in some way, but in a general sense, they still yearn for something and it's worth trying to help. I've known a lot of people with problems and never felt used by any of them, and I am far from anybody's doormat.

I don't believe they are really used as excuses. Consider that everyone always says they had no idea someone would kill themselves after they had committed suicide.

Idk about everyone but its very hard to tell when i'm super anxious. Then there's the guilt that comes with depression, and its usually pretty hard to stand up to yourself, or try to explain things. People who don't have depression, or bad anxiety issues can't understand how it feels when those hit you hard. So of course everything sounds like excuse to them.
