2 > 1 > 4 > 7 > 3 > 5 > 6 > 8

everything before 3 is great-awesome

3 is okay

the rest are garb but brand name makes them watchable

I liked 5 more than a lot of people did, but Dexter is the only show Ive ever watched that ended so badly that I regretted ever watching it in the first place

S2 = good
S3 = meh
S4 = great
S5 = fine
S6 = starts good, ends trash
S7 = alternates great episode with trash episode
S8 = hot garbage

I do maintain that if S5 ended with Deb finding out about Dexter itd be remembered way more fondly. Lumen was a decent character (better than Hannah) and I liked Jordan Chase as a villain. Take It is a high tier Dexter episode.

The cop out/stall on that led to the wholly unnecessary S6 just to get back to where we shouldve been after S5.

I'm still waiting for them to say, "We were just kidding, folks. Here's the real ending!!!"

I didn't think it would be possible to top how bad season 8 had already been, but they managed to do it.

Which, 5?

I didnt think it was awesome, but liked the Lumen as buddy-killer angle, liked Jordan Chase, and liked the setup for Deb to find out about Dexter.

However, like most things in Dexter, they went chickenshit and backed off out of every possible decision that would move the show forward. Lumen? Leaves for no reason. Deb finding out about Dexter? Deus ex plastic sheet. Quinns investigation? Dropped.

It had elements to be at least middle of the pack of the finale wasnt so weak. Its especially egregious because basically all of those elements eventually came back up two years later (with Hannah as a reskinned, less interesting Lumen) which tells you they had the endgame pieces in place mid-S5 but were too chicken to move forward.

5 was decent but coming right after one of the best seasons of any show is going to be a tough task

They did have a lot of interesting stories going on and the Quinn storyline was really good

After that though it was ehhh and even as someone who can overlook problems with a show I like, season 8 was a disaster. I honestly can't believe how bad it was

They had two choices.

a) Dexter slowly evolves as a human, realizes he is very capable of emotions, and eventually comes to terms with the fact that he only thinks killing is mandatory for him because Harry taught him to.

or

b) Dexter is a true cold-blooded psychopath.

They tried to have it both ways, and like you said, we just ended up with Shitty Batman. I really thought we were going for Option A with what we were shown, it seemed Harry teaching Dexter to take out the trash for him was a horrible mistake and its possible Dexter couldve been rehabilitated.
